(Interview ① continued) Director Lee Hwan of 'Project Y' revealed the casting backstory of actors Jung Young-joo and Kim Shin-rock, who left strong impressions in the work.
On the 16th afternoon at a café in Samcheong-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul, an interview was held with director Lee Hwan, who directed the film 'Project Y' (provided by: Plus M Entertainment, Pencher Invest Co., Ltd., distributed by: Plus M Entertainment, planned by: WOWPOINT (WOWPOINT), Climax Studio, produced by: Climax Studio, WOWPOINT (WOWPOINT) | co-produced by: Plus M Entertainment).
'Project Y' is a film about Miseon (Han So-hee) and Dokyung (Jeon Jong-seo), who dreamed of a different tomorrow while living in the middle of a glamorous city, and who, at the edge of life, steal black money and gold bullion, setting off events.
The leads driving the film are Han So-hee and Jeon Jong-seo, but Kim Shin-rock as Miseon and Dokyung's mother Choi Ga-young, and Jung Young-joo's shocking transformation as Hwang-so, a subordinate of boss To (Kim Sung-Cheol), also stood out. In particular, Jung Young-joo showed dedication by actually shaving her head for this character.
Director Lee Hwan said, "In Young-joo senior's case, isn't there a famous photo circulating on the internet?" referring to a photo from the production press conference for the musical 'Gone with the Wind.' At the time, Jung Young-joo had been bald for the play 'Frankenstein,' and the imbalance with her daring revealing costume became a topic among netizens. Lee Hwan said, "I don't read comments, but I happened to see the comments on that photo. Seeing Young-joo senior's image being ridiculed, I thought, 'This is strange. She is such a cool and perfect character.' Seeing that, I thought I should use this character. Thinking 'I should do it quickly before someone else does,' I naturally proposed the Hwang-so character to Young-joo senior."
He also said about Kim Shin-rock, "I strongly remembered her from 'Hell season 1.' There she was a very ordinary character who experiences some incident. I thought casting that kind of actor in an unusual space as an uncommon mother role would be interesting."
He added, "Actor Lee Jae Kyoon has had my trust and confidence since 'Park Hwa-young.' From when I was writing the script, I thought this role should definitely be played by Lee Jae Kyoon. I thought actor (Kim) Sung-Cheol, though he didn't have much screen time in 'Sweet Home season 1,' had a boyish charm. In playing the boss To this time, he isn't a boy, but I wanted to capture a shy side that peeks through in someone with obsessive tendencies. I don't know how viewers will feel, but I even directed that when he first appears, covering his mouth and laughing, it would be nice if he smiled shyly."
Regarding the intense acting battle that stood out in the confrontation scene between Jung Young-joo and Kim Shin-rock, Lee Hwan said, "It was a difficult scene to shoot. Because it was a location, not a set, and we couldn't rent the place for long, we had to shoot and leave within the allotted time. Also, it wasn't just Kim Shin-rock and Young-joo senior; there were many extras appearing as swallows, so the number of people made it complicated. In the original script there were scenes that showed more of the swallows' characters. But on set, talking with Kim Shin-rock and Young-joo senior, we felt, 'We can't shoot if we do it like this. It will be neither fish nor fowl.' I wanted to quickly choose and focus, so we cut other scenes and pushed to film the mirror effect between Miseon and Dokyung and the 'this is a fight between sisters' aspect of Hwang-so and Ga-young that we had thought of at the start."
