'You Quiz' Kim Hyeyoon confessed the hardships of her unknown years.
On the 14th broadcast of tvN variety show You Quiz on the Block (hereinafter 'You Quiz'), the reliable rising star Kim Hyeyoon appeared.
That day Kim Hyeyoon said she had auditioned more than 100 times and said, "When I went through a really busy period, I even had three auditions a day," adding, "I always went thinking, 'I'm going to fail again today,'" and said, "Every time I auditioned there was the complex of 'I'm too short, so I won't get it.'"
She continued, "I felt that being very short didn't suit the roles I wanted, but because I really wanted the parts I would fabricate things about myself. I'm 158cm but I said I was 160cm. Everything was wrong, but I would say I was 2cm taller and go around."
Kim Hyeyoon also confessed the humiliations of her unknown years. She recalled, "I was scolded in various ways. There were things that couldn't be aired. I heard a lot of swearing. When something upsetting happened on set or I got cursed at during filming, I cried on the bus or subway."
In that way Kim Hyeyoon endured her unknown years, appearing in 50 bit parts over seven years. When she was about 17 and in high school handling things alone without an agency, she said she went back and forth between acting practice and sets, adding, "If it was a very early morning shoot or deep in the mountains, I would ask my father to come, or if he had gone to work I rode in an extra's car to go."
She went on, "If they said, 'What time will you come?' I would go to a 24-hour cafe and wait until the bus came, then go to the set and wait nine hours, and still sometimes my turn wouldn't come. It was a continuous wait."
Especially Kim Hyeyoon confessed, "When it was cold the staff gave out heaters, but I thought I didn't deserve one yet. 'It's okay' became a habit for me to say. In high school I got frostbite on my fingers. From that day my hands swelled and my fingernails fell off. It was that cold," surprising listeners.
Then Yu Jae-seok asked, "You must have wondered whether this path was really yours," Kim Hyeyoon confessed, "After doing bit parts and background roles for so long I often thought, 'Am I acting well?' 'Is this my job?' At those times I watched one movie a day and exercised for an hour. If I didn't make my own rules this road felt too long and overwhelming."
Despite the difficult life, Kim Hyeyoon juggled auditions and studies and worked hard at college. As a result, she received scholarships all four years. About this she humbly replied, "My school had various scholarship programs."
Meanwhile, after seven years of anonymity Kim Hyeyoon overcame a 200:1 competition rate and was cast in the drama 'Sky Castle.' She recalled, "It's still so vivid," saying, "I thought, 'I'm going to fail again today.' I entered the audition room and they gave me about seven pages of lines for the day. It was a scene talking about Nietzsche's liberalism, so I searched a lot to find the meaning and then auditioned."
Kim Hyeyoon, who thought she would fail, went on to play the role of Yeseo in Sky Castle and gave a passionate performance. Kim Hyeyoon said, "I persistently asked. When I asked the director why he cast me he said, 'You were the only one who knew Yeseo's lines and acted them.'"
