"Sugar" Choi Ji-woo shared her feelings about returning to the screen after three years.
On the afternoon of the 15th at Lotte Cinema Konkuk University entrance in Seoul, a press screening for the film "Sugar" was held. Attending were lead actors Choi Ji-woo, Min Jin-woong, Go Dong-ha, and director Choi Shin-chun.
The film "Sugar" (director Choi Shin-chun, distributor Studio Target Co., Ltd.·Sambaeksanghoe Co., Ltd., production Horangi Giwoon·Message Film Co., Ltd.) is a human drama that depicts the passionate love and growth of mother Mira (played by Choi Ji-woo), who, after her young son (played by Go Dong-ha) was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, crossed legal and regulatory barriers to create a medical device herself. It was based on the true story of Kim Mi-young, the head of the Type 1 Diabetes Patients' Association, who has a son living with type 1 diabetes.
Choi Ji-woo passionately played Mira, a mother who confronts the world to protect her son. She sheds her existing pure and elegant "melo queen" image and shows fierce maternal love that will stop at nothing for her child and a bold side that raises her voice to the world. As a mother of a daughter herself, Choi Ji-woo said she deeply empathized with the real suffering experienced by families of type 1 diabetes patients and their desperate desire to protect their children, and decided to appear. She returns to the screen three years after the 2023 release of "New Normal."
Choi Ji-woo said, "It has been a long time since I filmed (a movie or other work), and first of all the script moved me deeply. And I fully empathized with the role of the mother. So I worked hard on filming."
Choi Ji-woo, who played a devoted mother for her sick son, said, "Perhaps it helped that I am a mother of a daughter. The child actor beside me now has grown more than I saw in the film. When we filmed, she was very babyish. At that time, just looking at her expressions and such moved my emotions and heart," adding, "Instead of thinking 'what should I do,' I naturally connected it to my own child, wondering 'what would it feel like if that child were really sick.' Without forcing myself to try hard, that maternal feeling came naturally."
Meanwhile, "Sugar" opens on the 21st.
