Hyun Joo-yeop appeared noticeably emaciated, shocking everyone. He said, "At my peak I weighed 137kg, but (after the controversy) I lost my appetite. I lost about 15kg in one month, and a total of about 40kg evaporated," suggesting the extent of his emotional suffering.
More serious than the physical changes was his psychological state. Hyun Joo-yeop said he is currently suffering from severe anxiety and sleep disorders, noting, "If I don't take medicine, I have sleep problems and can't sleep. In the morning I take about six pills that make you not sleepy, and in the evening I take about 14 to 15 pills including tranquilizers and sleeping pills," reporting a desperate current condition of relying on 21 pills a day.
In particular, Hyun Joo-yeop added that not only he but the whole family is taking psychiatric medication, adding to the sorrow. His son Jun-hee, a first-year high school student, also said, "I take psychiatric medication morning and night," and confessed a shocking state of mind: "(After the incident) I even had bad thoughts." Jun-hee reportedly had to be hospitalized for treatment as many as four times due to insomnia and breathing difficulties.
Jun-hee told his father, "My father in the past was a dream and the coolest person. Now he is a ruined hero," explaining the reason he shut his heart. Unable to endure the ridicule and cold stares of other students, the son, who ultimately gave up the basketball he loved and even took a leave of absence, made Hyun Joo-yeop bow his head in self-reproach.
