Actor Kim Seong-hwan revealed why he failed his son in the talent exam.
On the 13th, the YouTube channel "Song Seung-hwan's Wonderful Life" posted a video titled "Actor Kim Seong-hwan final episode (The real reason he directly failed his son in the KBS open talent audition...)".
In the released video, Kim Seong-hwan mentioned the anecdote of personally failing his son in the KBS open talent audition.
Kim Seong-hwan began, "From middle school he studied abroad, and he is my second son who studied very well. He was a sophomore in college at a good university, and he came back from the U.S. even though it wasn't during a break. I thought he must have talked with his mother, but he said, 'Father, I have something to tell you. To get straight to the point, I want to act.'"
He recalled, "It was a bolt from the blue. He had never shown any sign of that while attending school. While at school he did Shakespeare in English in theater and prepared in his own way. I didn't know. I told him, 'No, you can't. Really, you can't,' and when I was trying to stop him I said, 'Then when you graduate from college, I'll acknowledge it.' My son said, 'No matter how much I act in English, it won't help acting in Korea. I'll quickly enroll in a Korean university again.' He said he wanted to enter Seoul Institute of the Arts. Then he came and got in. He majored in theater and film, and what could I do when he went that far?"
He added, "Because your father acts, broadcasts and sings, I can't be your manager. You take care of it yourself. You choose and decide whether to get a manager, whether to sign a contract, do whatever you want. Don't tell your father," and let him do it. He went to auditions, carried things, and did this and that."
About the KBS open audition anecdote, he explained, "For the first time in over a decade KBS was recruiting actors. When I was serving as president of the talent association, we selected them jointly with KBS. We put out an advertisement and tens of thousands came, so the first round had to be a document screening. My son submitted his documents. I failed him in the first round. Then he came and caused an uproar. He said, 'Isn't this my real father? Tell me why I was eliminated in the first round. I have so much to show, why did I fail?'"
He went on, "They announced they would select 15 people. Why I failed him was because people were asking favors of me. Even seniors came to ask me. Relatives, a PD's nephew, the daughter of a senior actor. If I passed my son and those people failed, I would not only get criticized but it would be inhumane. After failing my son, I told the judges, 'No matter what, let's select 15 people by ability. Let's be loud about it. Don't accept favors,' and we selected them perfectly. All our talent family members failed. It even made the newspapers, saying the heartless father who failed his son," he joked.
