One of the world's most prestigious awards shows, the Golden Globe Awards stage, drew laughs with an unexpected K-pop playlist.
The 83rd Golden Globes, held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles, U.S., drew attention not only for the winners but also for the "entrance music."
At the ceremony, Blackpink member Jennie's solo song "Like Jennie" played as background music the moment Hollywood actor and singer Jennifer Lopez appeared, adding to the atmosphere. Online reactions mixed laughter at the meeting of the two "Jennies" who share the same name.
When director Judd Apatow took the stage next, Rosé of Blackpink's global hit "APT." — a collaboration with pop star Bruno Mars — played. The coincidental similarity in pronunciation between "Apatow" and "APT." prompted reactions such as "Was that played purely on a stream-of-consciousness basis?", "A sign of K-pop's stature," "I never imagined 'APT.' would play when Apatow appeared," and "I can't believe they played that."
It didn't stop there. Another Blackpink member, Lisa, stepped onstage as a presenter, firmly reinforcing K-pop's presence.
K-pop momentum continued in the awards results. The soundtrack "Golden" from the Netflix animation "K-Pop Demon Hunters" beat nominees such as Avatar: Fire and Ash and Wicked: For Good to win best original song. The film also took home best animated feature, making it a double celebration.
Whether intentional or not, K-pop, which permeated many parts of the Golden Globe stage, proved it is no longer a "special appearance" but a natural choice. From a few seconds of entrance music to presenters and winners—this year's Golden Globes was another night that showed K-pop has taken its place at the heart of Hollywood.
