'Extreme 84' Kian84 could not hide his worry about the ice-glazed glacier course.
On the 11th episode of MBC entertainment show "Extreme 84" (episode 7), the extreme crew Kian84, Kwon Hwa Woon and Kangnam were shown worrying about the glacier course ahead of the Arctic marathon.
That day the three confirmed the participant list at the transit point Denmark Expo and received bib numbers and marathon supplies because there is nothing in the Arctic. Kangnam, who received his first-ever bib number, said, "I didn't know there was such a system. I registered and didn't know there was a place to get a bib and that there was a chip and things like that, so it was amazing."
Later, when a polar bear photo was hung inside, Kangnam worried, "Bro, I don't think this thing should come out. I can't win against this. It's bigger than I thought." Kian84 also said, "I can't win. If I meet it, I'm dead."
Marathon expos they had experienced so far had a festive atmosphere, but this Arctic marathon expo created a more solemn mood than expected. In the awkward atmosphere, Kian84 happened to meet a participant who had run the South African marathon, one of the "big 5" marathons, at the same table and expressed delight.
The participant was from Australia, and Kwon Hwa Woon asked whether the Australian marathon participant who had won first place at the time would appear this time, and when told "his ankle was broken" he happily said, "I'll be first in the Arctic." Seeing this, Lee Eunji reacted, "This is the first time a Korean is attempting this, so if a Korean comes in first it would be huge."
Meanwhile, an official from the organizer warned of the dangers of the glacier course for participants. He showed a video saying that one cannot walk easily without crampons and added that participants must wear crampons and run 10 km, surprising everyone.
Kangnam sighed, "This is going to be really tough," and Kian84 sighed, "How can we finish within seven hours?" As the ice-glazed glacier course continued to unexpected sections such as snowy mountains and hills, even veteran runners began to stir.
The official also said, "If you see an X mark you must stop. The Arctic glacier is wild. Do not undertake any kind of exploration," "the medical team is on standby at all times," and "tomorrow morning we will fly with the participants to Greenland."
After all the explanations, Kangnam, who was running a marathon for the first time, worried, "I can't run this. I don't think I can climb the glacier," and said, "That party made me more anxious. Running on ice, isn't the surface different? I haven't been able to run in places like this and I don't know the course and I have to finish within seven hours, so I'm afraid I won't be able to finish."
Bu-crew leader Kwon Hwa Woon also admitted, "I can't get a feel for it," and said, "It feels like a very reckless challenge. There was a trembling tension in taking on a challenge in an unknown world."
Kian84, who had been worried about Kangnam throughout the video, said, "Can Kangnam really run this? I was very worried and very nervous." He added that "even the atmosphere among people was down," expressing tension about the daunting 10 km glacier course just by imagining it.
