Comedian Kim Won-hyo mentioned "pregnancy" as a New Year's goal, then drew attention by delivering a serious message about infertility.
On the 10th, the TV CHOSUN current affairs and culture program "Know your body" aired a segment asking cast members about their New Year's plans under the theme "One year of health, reset my body!"
When MC Kim Ji-min asked, "Are you keeping your New Year's resolutions?" Kim Won-hyo answered without hesitation, "pregnancy," drawing attention.
When Kim Ji-min, surprised by the unexpected answer, asked, "Aren't you preparing?" Kim Won-hyo immediately added, "I'm going to try," revealing it was a joke and prompting laughter. The sudden remark caused the cast to burst into laughter.
The broadcast then continued with an expert's explanation of the reality of infertility. The doctor explained, "One in 10 couples in the Republic of Korea experiences infertility, and in the past four years the infertility rate has increased by more than 31%, pushing the number of patients over 300,000."
Hearing this, Kim Won-hyo said, "Infertility now seems to be not just an individual problem but a national challenge," and added, "You have to act quickly while you're even one year younger."
Kim Won-hyo's remarks also came from his own experiences. Kim Won-hyo and his wife, Shim Jin-hwa, underwent long-term infertility treatment and in vitro fertilization, but last year he revealed that they had decided "to live well without a child" and gave up plans for a second child. Shim Jin-hwa also said at the time, "I am grateful to those who supported us. You do not need to cheer us on about having a child anymore," which resonated with many.
