"Kukhan84"'s Gangnam, who is attempting his first-ever marathon, expressed concern about the glacier course.
In episode 7 of MBC variety show "Kukhan84," which aired on the 11th, the extreme crew Kian84, Kwon Hwa Woon, and Gangnam finally arrived at the Arctic.
That day, because there is nothing in the Arctic, they confirmed the participant list at the transit point, the Denmark expo, and received their bibs and marathon supplies.
An official warned that it is dangerous without crampons, showed a warning video and said, "You must wear crampons and run 10 km." Gangnam said, "This is going to be really tough," and Kian84 sighed, "How can we finish within seven hours?"
A solemn atmosphere settled over the frozen glacier course. The Arctic marathon requires entering the ice cap at the start, running about 10 km on icy terrain, then enduring various courses including snow, snowy mountains and hills, and finishing within seven hours. Even experienced runners were unsettled by the unexpected course, and Gangnam, a first-time marathoner, said, "You can't run this."
An official explained, "If you see an X mark, you must stop. The Arctic ice is wild. Do not attempt any kind of exploration," "The medical team is on standby at all times," and "Tomorrow morning we will fly with the participants to Greenland."
After all the explanations, Kwon Hwa Woon said, "I can't feel it yet," and lamented, "It's a very reckless challenge, but there is a tension mixed with excitement from challenging an unknown world."
By contrast, Gangnam expressed worry, "I'm worried. That party made me more anxious. Running on ice — isn't the surface different? I haven't run in places like this, and I don't know the course, and we have to finish within seven hours; I'm afraid I won't make it."
Kian84, who was particularly worried about Gangnam, said, "I was very worried whether Gangnam could run this. I was nervous. Even the mood among people was down."
Finally entering the Arctic, the extreme crew took a bus with the participants to the lodging where they would stay for three nights and four days, unpacked their bags and began communal life. Before the race, the organizers conducted an exploration of the Russell Glacier encountered at the 15 km mark.
Following the guide's explanation, the extreme crew encountered animals such as reindeer and muskox; they disembarked somewhere and, following the organizers' guidance, moved to see the glacier. An uphill path began from the entrance, and on the thin icy ground Gangnam said, "It's already hard."
After winding along the ridgeline, they finally faced the Russell Glacier. The extreme crew exclaimed, "Wow," and "Is this possible?" in admiration. Kian84 said, "How long has this been here?" and could not take his eyes off its overwhelming size.
