Monk Seonjae explained the "Dubai jjondeuk cookie" incident when judge Anh Sung-jae from Culinary Class Wars season 2 met him, drawing laughter.
On the 10th, a video titled 'Is this paradise? A temple meal made with Monk Seonjae and the first reveal of the Culinary Class Wars season 2 review' was uploaded to the Chef Anh Sung channel.
Monk Seonjae, Korea's first master of temple cuisine, recently participated as a White Spoon on the Netflix variety show Culinary Class Wars 2 and drew attention by advancing to the top seven. Judge Anh Sung-jae went to meet Monk Seonjae in person, and the two discussed various foods.
Anh Sung-jae asked about the differences between temple food and vegan food, and Monk Seonjae said, "People think that if they eat vegetarian food that's temple food, but that's wrong. Temple food bans scallions, garlic and meat; meat is banned because of the emphasis on valuing life, but the reason scallions and garlic are banned is that all foods are described in terms of energy," he said.
He continued, "(In Buddhist doctrine you look at whether the energy of all foods is) dynamic or static, and monks are practicing to calm the mind, so you must exclude things that cause excitement. Scallions and garlic themselves have very yang energy. So after eating them, instead of calming down, the mind becomes excited," explaining the reason for the ban.
Anh Sung-jae asked, "So are we more irritable these days? People outside these days?" and Monk Seonjae replied, "That can be true. But sweeter tastes make people more irritable than scallions and garlic." At that point Anh Sung-jae asked, "Do you know the Dubai jjondeuk cookie? Dubai jjondeuk cookie?" and Monk Seonjae answered, "I saw it before. I did it with these people."
Earlier, Anh Sung-jae became the center of controversy after making the Dubai jjondeuk cookie with his two children on his channel.
The eldest daughter was excited, expecting the trendy round Dubai jjondeuk cookie, but Anh Sung-jae insisted on a completely different recipe, leaving his daughter, who had high expectations, unable to hide her disappointment. His daughter Si-yeong said, "It's supposed to be made round..", "You don't put the kadaif in here, you mix this with that", "This really isn't it.. is this right?", repeatedly tilting her head, and in the end a square Dubai jjondeuk cookie in the shape of a sesame candy was born, prompting a flood of complaints in the comment section.
Taking out the "Dubai jjondeuk cookie" in front of Monk Seonjae, Anh Sung-jae muttered an explanation: "It's extremely sweet. So it was too sweet for me, too sweet, so I thought 'this won't do for our children,' but these days everyone likes sweet things," which drew laughter as the caption 'Anh Sung-jae Dubai jjondeuk cookie incident first explanation' appeared on the screen.
On Anh Sung-jae's channel comments are overflowing with messages such as "Quickly call Si-yeong and make the Dubai jjondeuk cookie again," "We'll wait until the Dubai jjondeuk cookie is made properly," "To cover up the Dubai jjondeuk cookie controversy you even booked Im-jjang to sway public opinion. Definitely not an ordinary person," and "I didn't expect you to use religion to get past the Dubai jjondeuk cookie controversy."
