HYBE and Geffen Records' global girl group KATSEYE created a historic surge with their new song "Internet Girl," smashing records on the U.K. Official Singles Top 100 and Spotify's U.S. charts.
KATSEYE's "Internet Girl" debuted at No. 24 on the latest U.K. Official Singles Top 100 chart (Jan. 9-15) released on the 10th (local time). It surpassed the highest position (No. 38) achieved by their previous global hit "Gabriela" on the same chart in its first week after release.
The U.K. Official Singles Top 100, along with the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, is considered one of the world's two major music charts. Songs that enter the top 40 on this chart receive repeated airplay on BBC Radio 1 and major streaming platforms, greatly increasing public recognition, which raises expectations for next week's Billboard Hot 100 movements.
The reaction in the United States has been even hotter. "Internet Girl" ranked No. 19 on this week's Spotify Weekly Top Songs USA chart (Jan. 2-8). That is also KATSEYE's highest placement on that chart. On the Weekly Top Songs Global chart it rose to No. 31, signaling wider popularity ahead.
"Internet Girl" features flashy dance-pop sounds and an addictive hook. The witty lyrics respond cleverly to the various gazes and reactions poured out online, creating a playful tone. The so-called "emoji dance," in which performers briefly cover their faces with their hands and then reveal rapidly changing expressions, has also received explosive response on social media.
Alongside the new single's success, their earlier hits are showing strong staying power. "Gabriela," released in June last year, reached No. 17 on Spotify's Weekly Top Songs Global chart and achieved 29 consecutive weeks on the chart. This week it re-entered the U.K. Official Singles Top 100 at No. 93, beginning a rebound. "Gnarly," released in April last year, also re-entered Spotify's Weekly Top Songs Global chart at No. 174, bringing its cumulative weeks on the chart to 33.
KATSEYE was formed through the audition project "The Debut: Dream Academy" based on the "K-pop methodology" and debuted in the United States in June 2024. They are considered a representative success case of the "multi-home, multi-genre" strategy led by HYBE chairman Bang Si-hyuk.
Last year KATSEYE placed "Gnarly" and "Gabriela" on the U.S. Billboard main song chart, the Hot 100, and their EP BEAUTIFUL CHAOS, which includes both songs, reached No. 4 on the Billboard 200. They are also nominated for Best New Artist and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance at the 68th Grammy Awards to be held next month.
