Actor Kim Eui-sung spoke his convictions while mentioning the late Lee Sun-kyun.
Recently, at a café in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, an interview was conducted with Kim Eui-sung, a lead actor in the drama 'Taxi Driver 3'.
'Taxi Driver 3' is the so-called "private revenge agency" in which employees of the taxi company Mujigae Transport, run by Jang Seong-chul, the head of the crime victim support center Bluebird Foundation (Kim Eui-sung), carry out revenge on behalf of wronged victims. Led by former special forces officer and taxi driver Kim Do-gi (Lee Je-hoon), white hat hacker An Go-eun (Pyo Ye-jin), new car development researcher Chief Choi Kyung-gu Choi (Jang Hyuk-jin), aerospace researcher Chief Park Jin-eon Park (Bae Yu Ram) and others act as "dark heroes" who solve cases based on true events, raising social awareness and catharsis.
When asked about his feelings on reaching his 60th year, Kim Eui-sung smiled and said, "These days not many people talk about turning 60, but I'm excited by myself," adding, "I'm proud that I lived to 60. I'm proud that I didn't give up in the middle of it. We might not be able to celebrate my 70th, so I want to celebrate freely. But my juniors looked and said, 'I should do that too.' After all, 70 is hard to play at. You should play now," he joked.
He said, "I want to live truly harmlessly and enjoyably. I don't want those two things to infringe on my freedom," adding, "If I am to contribute anything socially going forward, it has been two years since actor Lee Sun-kyun passed away. At that time we promised not to stop efforts to enact laws or take measures related to him to prevent such things from happening again. But since not much has been achieved, I feel ashamed," he expressed his convictions, drawing attention.
He continued calmly, "If something has to be done, it need not be limited to the acting field, but I wondered how society could reduce cases where someone is driven and ruined to the point that they cannot get back up."
Kim Eui-sung also said, "Actually, it might be right not to carry such a burden, but as an actor I can't let go of the feeling that I must not disappoint people. I want to be an actor who never disappoints, whether through acting or in life," adding with a smile, "Of course the world is very divided, so there will always be people who dislike me, but I want to live well so that it doesn't increase."
Meanwhile, the late Lee Sun-kyun reported to the police that in October 2023 he was extorted of 350 million won after being threatened by a woman A, a manager of an entertainment establishment in Gangnam, Seoul, and another woman B. However, A alleged Lee Sun-kyun's drug use, and he was booked not as a victim of extortion but as a suspect on drug use charges. Lee Sun-kyun was summoned three times by the Incheon Police Agency for questioning, but various precise tests including body hair and urine returned negative for drugs.
Nevertheless, Lee Sun-kyun's allegations were widely publicized through the media from the preliminary investigation stage. Some outlets spread everything from past mobile messenger chats between Lee Sun-kyun and A to details of the police investigation. After suffering extreme public criticism, Lee Sun-kyun was found dead on the morning of Dec. 27, 2023, two months after the investigation began.
