"nation's actor" the late Ahn Sung-ki is honored in MBC's memorial special documentary "Nation's actor, Ahn Sung-ki," which will air on Sunday the 11th at 11:10 p.m.
The special documentary "Nation's actor, Ahn Sung-ki" records the life of actor Ahn Sung-ki, who lived as "the history of Korean cinema" and the "face of an era," and the final traces he left behind. It includes interviews with junior actors such as Lee Mi-Sook, Lee Bo-hee, Park Cheol-min, Kim Sang-kyung and Seo Hyunjin, and filmmakers who worked in the same era such as Im Kwon-taek, Lee Jang-ho, Bae Chang-ho and Lee Myung-se. In particular, photographer Koo Bon-chang, who worked with the late actor for many years, said, "After receiving a call from the bereaved family that they had not prepared a portrait photograph in time, I provided the photo the late actor's wife liked the most and joined him on his final path."
The special documentary "Nation's actor, Ahn Sung-ki" also depicts his final moments, showing how he fought illness but never let go of his responsibility to acting until the end. In the last recorded images of him alive, actor Ahn Sung-ki, even while battling illness, said "I have gotten much better" and did not lose his smile, and those moments are conveyed through the voices of those close to him.
It also highlights his quiet good deeds and social roles off screen as well as his life as an actor. Actor Ahn Sung-ki served for a long time as a UNICEF goodwill ambassador, visiting many countries around the world to meet children and steadily raising his voice to bring attention to places in need. He was a star who defined an era and also a warm person who knew to look after the marginalized first.
Meanwhile, MBC released two poster versions for the memorial special documentary "Nation's actor, Ahn Sung-ki," produced using works by photographer Koo Bon-chang, who had been associated with actor Ahn Sung-ki for more than 40 years. The posters used the photograph taken on Yonsei University's Sinchon campus, the filming location of the 1987 film "Our Happy Young Days," which was used as the portrait photo, and an unpublished photo taken in 1994 in Gurye, Jeonnam, the filming location of the movie "Taebaek Mountains."
Actor Byun Yo-Han narrates the memorial special documentary "Nation's actor, Ahn Sung-ki." Byun Yo-Han, who formed a connection with actor Ahn Sung-ki through the film "Hansan," speaks about the late actor in a calm voice with respect and mourning. His narration is the final farewell from a junior to a great actor and is expected to become the voice of all who remember and miss the late actor, having laughed and cried with actor Ahn Sung-ki through an era.
