A major star of Korea's film industry, actor Ahn Sung-ki passed away, prompting nationwide mourning. His eldest son, Ahn Da-bin, represented the bereaved family to personally offer thanks and saw his father on his final path.
On the 5th, Ahn Da-bin posted a photo of a white chrysanthemum on his Instagram along with the words "Thank you sincerely for the warm condolences."
The late Ahn Sung-ki passed away at 9 a.m. on the 5th while receiving treatment in the intensive care unit at Soonchunhyang University Hospital in Yongsan District, Seoul, surrounded by family. He was 74.
News of the deterioration of the late one's health was reported on the 31st of last month. On the previous day, the 30th, he collapsed while eating at home after food went down the wrong way into his airway, was found in cardiac arrest and immediately received cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) before being taken to a nearby hospital emergency room. He was later treated in the intensive care unit in an unconscious state, but ultimately died on the 5th.
On the 4th, Ahn Da-bin drew attention by posting some images from the photo book of the film "I want to go to that island." This appears to be a reflection on the past while his father was seriously ill; Ahn Sung-ki starred in the film and his son Ahn Da-bin appeared as a child actor, and they had shared the screen together.
The wake was set up in funeral room 31 at Seoul St. Mary's Hospital, and the bereaved family members listed as mourners were his wife, Oh So-young, and their two sons. After formal condolences began, Jung Woo-sung and Lee Jung-jae were shown greeting mourners alongside the bereaved family.
The two are founders of the artist agency Artist Company, Ahn Sung-ki's agency, and will, along with other film figures, take charge of carrying the late one. The funeral will be held as a film industry funeral organized by the Shin Young-kyun Arts and Culture Foundation and The Korea Film Actors Association. Honorary chairmen Shin Young-kyun and director Bae Chang-ho, Lee Gab-seong, chairman of The Korea Film Actors Association, Shin Eon-sik, acting head of the Shin Young-kyun Arts and Culture Foundation, and Yang Yoon-ho, chairman of the Korean Filmmakers Association, served as four co-funeral chairmen.
Meanwhile, the late one was diagnosed with blood cancer in 2019 and underwent chemotherapy, receiving a clean bill of health in 2020. During later routine checkups, a relapse was confirmed after six months, after which he suspended entertainment industry activities and devoted himself to treatment.
Messages of mourning from all walks of life have been delivered following the announcement of the late one's death. Archbishop Jeong Soon-taek of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Seoul expressed deep condolences at the passing of the late Ahn Sung-ki, actor John the Apostle, and the Korean Committee for UNICEF, where the late one had long served as a goodwill ambassador, also expressed condolences.
In addition, many stars such as Kim Jong-soo, Hwang Jae-geun, Shin Hyun-joon, Bae Chul-soo, Lee Young-ae, Yoon Jongshin, and Lee Si-eon posted messages of mourning on social media expressing their sorrow.
