Actor Ahn Sung-ki has finally passed away. It has been six days since he was rushed to the hospital after a sudden cardiac arrest.
Ahn collapsed on the afternoon of the 30th of last month at his home while eating when food went down his airway; he was found in cardiac arrest, immediately received cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and was taken to a nearby hospital emergency room. He was then treated unconscious in the intensive care unit, but ultimately died at 9 a.m. on the 5th at the age of 74.
Agency Artist Company earlier said, "He was taken to the hospital after a sudden deterioration in his health and is receiving treatment under the care of medical staff," and added a cautious comment that "the exact condition and future course are being confirmed according to the medical team's judgment." Reports emerged that he had passed the crisis, but the agency declined to comment further, saying it was too soon to speak of improvement.
Only some immediate family members stayed at his bedside, and it was reported with added sorrow that his eldest son, who was staying in the United States, was hastily arranging to return home. Colleagues in the entertainment industry and fans fervently prayed for his recovery, but in the end they received the sad news.
Earlier, actor Park Joong-hoon said at a recent essay release press meeting, "I am not in a position to make personal calls or send texts, so I am asking the family about his condition. I am speaking calmly, but I am sad," expressing his distress. Also, actor Ko Gun Han, who won the supporting actor award at the 'SBS Drama Awards' held on the 31st of last month, said in his acceptance speech, "I was heartbroken when I read this morning's article. I believe he will definitely overcome this," which brought a hush to the venue.
Ahn was diagnosed with blood cancer in 2019 and continued to battle the illness. He was once declared cured, but the disease recurred; nonetheless, he did not give up on acting, appearing in films such as 'The Divine Fury', 'In the Name of My Son', 'Cassiopeia', Hansan: Rising Dragon, and Noryang: Deadly Sea.
Even on the 1st, which was his birthday, quiet wishes for his recovery spread instead of celebrations, and colleagues in the entertainment industry and fans sent messages of support saying, "We want to see you smiling on screen again." However, Ahn ultimately concluded his long journey, leaving deep sorrow in the hearts of many.
The late man's funeral was set up in room 31 of Seoul St. Mary's Hospital funeral hall on the 5th. Tributes from fellow entertainers and juniors have continued, creating a wave of deep mourning.<
