Jung Kyungho has become the center of allegations of a manipulated trial.
On the 3rd (Sat), the tvN weekend drama PROBONO (writer Moon Yooseok/ director Kim Seongyoon/ planning Studio Dragon/ production Sequence One, Lotte Cultureworks, Studio Flow) episode 9 unfolded the pro bono team's quest for the truth surrounding allegations of a manipulated trial brought against Kang Dawit (played by Jung Kyungho).
In episode 9, the metropolitan area household rating averaged 6% with a peak of 7.3%, and the nationwide household rating averaged 6% with a peak of 7.3%, ranking first among cable and general programming channels in the same time slot by both metropolitan and nationwide standards. It also ranked first among cable and general programming channels in tvN's target 20-49 male and female ratings. That day, pro bono team member Park Gippeum (played by So Juyeon) fell into great turmoil after her interview with habitual fraudster Yoo Jaebeom (played by Yeon Jaewook). Yoo Jaebeom not only admitted to framing Kang Dawit on bribery charges, but also mentioned Kang Dawit's manipulated trial as the reason for the crime. Yoo Jaebeom handed over evidence gathered over 10 years, adding credibility to his claim of being a victim of the judiciary and further complicating Park Gippeum's feelings.
Wrestling with the matter alone, Park Gippeum convened a pro bono team meeting without Kang Dawit. Reviewing the large fire accident at the factory once operated by Yoo Jaebeom's father Yoo Baekman (played by Kim Yongjun), Park Gippeum explained that Judge Kang Dawit, who was presiding at the time, held the representative Yoo Baekman responsible rather than the factory manager who had been in charge of safety management, and furthermore issued an unusually severe sentence that drew significant public attention.
In addition, Park Gippeum shared circumstances and evidence that cast doubt on Kang Dawit's manipulated trial. She said that Yoo Baekman, who maintained his innocence, died of an illness during incarceration and that there exists a statement from the factory manager claiming he could not testify freely because the trial had moved in the direction of holding the representative accountable.
If this claim is true, suspicions that Kang Dawit intentionally intervened in the trial would inevitably rise. The troubled pro bono team tried to hear Kang Dawit's side directly, but before they had the chance the situation rapidly worsened. Additional publicization of allegations of Kang Dawit's manipulated trial was followed by the firm's de facto head Oh Gyujang (played by Kim Kap-soo) urging him, as a public interest lawyer, to take Yoo Jaebeom's case.
Desperate above all for a conversation with Kang Dawit, the pro bono team finally heard the other side of the story from him. Kang Dawit said his mother, who worked at Yoo Baekman's metal factory, lost a hand in the accident and that her damages lawsuit was dismissed after being delayed for more than a year and a half. Kang Dawit said that experience was the starting point for his path into the legal profession and that he wanted to be a judge who upheld fairness so that victims like his mother would not be created again.
But as soon as Kang Dawit finished speaking, immediate questions were raised within the pro bono team. Hwang Junwoo (played by Kang Hyung suk) pointed out that for a fair trial he should at least have recused himself, and Park Gippeum also said that Kang Dawit's revealed story could rather be interpreted as a strong motive for the crime, which cast a tense atmosphere.
And at that moment, Kang Dawit suddenly smiled meaningfully and said, "You learned well, from me? Yes, I did that," shocking those present. He then indicated he would exercise his right to remain silent and, saying "see you in court," calmly left the pro bono team office, plunging viewers into deep confusion.
