'Sokpuli Show Dongchimi' comedian Kim Su-yong wiped away tears at the love his daughter Na-won sent.
On the 3rd broadcast of MBN 'Sokpuli Show Dongchimi' (hereafter 'Dongchimi'), Kim Su-yong, who last November suffered a myocardial infarction that led to cardiac arrest, appeared. He said, "When I was a rookie I often played the role of the grim reaper," and did not hold back his spicy humor from the opening.
Kim Su-yong explained the events of that day: "On the morning of Nov. 13 last year my chest felt tight when I woke up. It was a squeezing feeling. If the worst pain is rated a 10, it hurt a lot. So I asked someone to bring me a pain-relief patch."
Because the chest pain that morning was unusual, he drove himself to the Gapyeong set. The schedule was Kim Sook's YouTube shoot. Arriving about an hour early, he felt chest pain again. Kim Sook said, "Go to the hospital immediately," attached her manager to Kim Su-yong and went to a clinic in Gapyeong town.
Kim Su-yong said, "I get a medical checkup every year and was diagnosed with reflux esophagitis. With shallow medical knowledge I told the internal medicine doctor, 'Couldn't reflux esophagitis cause sharp chest pains?' Still, he said to do an electrocardiogram, so we did it, and the doctor said, 'The heartbeat is irregular. Go to a big hospital,'" and said he returned to the set, smoked a cigarette, then lost consciousness and collapsed.
Afterward, many people worked to save Kim Su-yong. Im Hyung-jun gave him an angina pill he kept on a necklace, and alternating with Kim Sook's manager performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation while waiting for the paramedics. When Kim Su-yong's tongue rolled back, Kim Sook, who was directing the scene, pulled his tongue out to keep his airway clear. Paramedics who arrived on the scene in eight minutes used a defibrillator on Kim Su-yong and worked to bring him back to consciousness.
Kim Su-yong said, "Usually four to five uses of a defibrillator are enough to restore consciousness, but they used it seven times and I still had no consciousness. I heard that at that point they usually consider you dead. But these people didn't give up and kept going. Just as they were about to give up, I woke up."
Kim Yong Man, who was abroad, was very surprised to receive a call from Kim Sook but first calmly hung up. However, he said, "There was nothing I could do. So I just prayed. Really, it's Kim Su-yong, and you know all of Kim Su-yong's family. I thought he shouldn't be taken now. The phone rang. I didn't even want to answer. I was afraid Kim Su-yong might have died. Fortunately, they said he woke up."
Kim Su-yong told an anecdote about trying to get close to his daughter Na-won, saying that the now-grown Na-won repeatedly told him, "Dad, be a little funnier. And quit smoking and exercise."
A letter written by Na-won arrived at the set. In the letter she wrote, "Of course I thought dad would be a big support at our side for life, but hearing such news didn't feel real. I'm glad you're getting healthy again. Dad always says he's fine, but I don't think so. Please tell me if you hurt even a little. Of course quit smoking, and exercise," and Kim Su-yong wiped away tears and replied, "I'll make you laugh. And of course I'll quit smoking and exercise."
