Actor Ahn Sung-ki has been hospitalized for cardiac arrest for five days. Although he celebrated his birthday on the 1st, wishes for his recovery have been passed between the entertainment industry and the public instead of congratulations.
Ahn Sung-ki is reported to have collapsed on the afternoon of the 30th of last month at his home after food became lodged in his throat while he was eating. Found in a state of cardiac arrest, he received immediate cardiopulmonary resuscitation and was transported to a nearby hospital emergency room, after which he was moved to the intensive care unit for continued treatment. He is now on the fifth day of hospitalization, and medical staff continue to keep him under close observation.
Agency Artist Company said, "Senior actor Ahn Sung-ki was transported to the hospital and is receiving treatment due to a sudden deterioration in his health," and added, "The exact condition and future course are being confirmed according to the medical team's judgment." The agency asked people to consider the actor and his family's stability as the top priority and conveyed a cautious stance.
Some speculated that he had passed the crisis, but the agency withheld comment, saying, "It is not the stage to mention improvement." Only immediate family members are currently in the hospital room, and the eldest son, who had been staying in the United States, has already returned and is reported to be at his father's side. It is expected that more time will be needed before specific diagnostic results and future treatment directions are available.
Ahn Sung-ki was diagnosed with blood cancer in 2019 and endured a long period of treatment. Although he was once declared fully recovered, the illness recurred, and even amid that he did not stop acting. Through works such as "The Divine Fury", "In the Name of the Son", "Cassiopeia", "Hansan: Rising Dragon", and "Noryang: Deadly Sea", he maintained his place as an actor until the end.
Concern for him continued even on awards stages. At the "SBS Drama Awards" held on the 31st of last month, supporting actor award winner Ko Gun Han mentioned Ahn Sung-ki in his acceptance speech, saying, "I was heartbroken to read this morning's article," and "My mother is also battling blood cancer, and I believe senior actor Ahn Sung-ki will definitely overcome this," remarks that fell silent over the audience.
Ahn Sung-ki, who debuted at the age of five in 1957, is an actor who has been present at major moments in the history of Korean cinema with films such as "A Windy Day", "Whale Hunting", "The Southern Army", "White War", "Two Cops", "Silmido", "Broken Arrow", and "Hansan: Rising Dragon." His name alone evokes an era.
Now on the fifth day of hospitalization, many are quietly waiting for his recovery. Supportive messages continue, saying, "Right now we only hope he regains his health," and "We want to see that smile on the screen again."
