'Reply 1988' reunited for its 10th anniversary, and Kim Sunyoung and Ko Kyung-pyo ultimately broke down in tears when they saw 'Jinju' Kim Seol, who reunited with them after 10 years.
On the Feb. 2 broadcast, the final episode of tvN's variety show Reply 1988 10th anniversary special showed the last story of the Ssangmundong families reuniting for a 2 Days & 1 Night MT. Laughter and memories flowed as an unexpected meeting filled the scene with emotion in an instant.
During the 'famous lines quiz' held that day, a line spoken by Sunwoo's youngest, Jinju, was used as a question. Right after a song hint was played, the production team introduced a surprise guest, saying, "Kyung-pyo's younger sibling has arrived." At that moment, Kim Seol, who played Sunwoo's five-year-old Jinju 10 years ago, appeared having grown up significantly, surprising everyone.
Unlike the neighbors who approached smiling with joy, Kim Sunyoung and Ko Kyung-pyo, who were family members in the drama, stood frozen for a while, unable to approach easily. Overcome by emotion first, the two eventually burst into tears.
Kim Sunyoung said, "There was no father in my house. So there were a lot of somewhat sad things," and added, "Suddenly the three of us are sitting like this and that feeling from back then rushes up." Ko Kyung-pyo also said, "I'm going crazy," and was unable to continue speaking as he sobbed, leaving viewers moved.
Looking at Kim Seol, who has already become a second-year middle school student, Kim Sunyoung recalled deeply. She said, "She doesn't remember that age. My daughter is exactly that age, and she doesn't remember then," and added, "I still vividly remember the last day of filming, her being carried on a mother's back as she left. It felt like really sending my daughter away."
She continued, "So I made a promise then. I told myself never to get that attached again. It was too painful," and confessed, "So with child actors I met afterward, I deliberately kept my distance when we weren't filming. It was too sad to get attached and then part."
By contrast, Kim Seol calmly said she did not remember at the time. Hearing this, Ko Kyung-pyo said, "I kept holding her on set. But now that she's grown so much and comes like this, I'm glad and surprised, yet I can't bring myself to approach," and said, "It's neither a happy nor a sad feeling… it's an emotion I've never felt before," showing tears again.
Meanwhile, Kim Seol shared that she is currently attending a gifted education center, surprising viewers once more. She said, "I attended a gifted education center until sixth grade in elementary school, and now I have completed another gifted education program," and showed how she has grown.
