Actor Ahn Sung-ki's health concerns have continued for the fourth day. Although he celebrated his birthday on the 1st, feelings of hoping for his recovery have quietly spread between the entertainment industry and the public.
It was reported that Ahn Sung-ki collapsed after food got stuck in his throat while eating at home on the afternoon of the 30th of last month. Found in cardiac arrest, he immediately received cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and was taken to a nearby hospital emergency room, and he is currently being treated in the intensive care unit. Two days have passed since the news became known, but concerns surrounding his condition have not easily subsided.
Artist Company said, "Senior Ahn Sung-ki was transported to the hospital due to a sudden deterioration in his health and is receiving care from medical staff," and added, "The exact condition and future progress are being confirmed according to medical judgment." It added, "Please prioritize the actor and his family's stability," and declined to say more.
Some reports said he had passed the crisis, but the agency said, "It is not yet the stage to mention improvement," maintaining a cautious stance. Only immediate family members are by his bedside, and his eldest son, who was staying in the United States, is reported to be urgently returning to Korea. It is expected that more time will be needed until the exact diagnosis results come out.
After being diagnosed with blood cancer in 2019, Ahn Sung-ki endured a long period of treatment. He was once declared cured, but the disease later recurred, and even amid that he did not give up his commitment to acting. He quietly kept his place by appearing in major films such as "The Divine Fury", "In the Name of the Son", "Cassiopeia", "Hansan: Rising Dragon", and "Noryang: Deadly Sea."
Worries about him continued on the awards stage as well. At the "SBS Drama Awards" held on the 31st of last month, supporting actor winner Ko Gun Han bowed his head while mentioning Ahn Sung-ki in his acceptance speech. He said, "I read the article about senior Ahn Sung-ki this morning and my heart ached," and added, "My mother is also battling blood cancer, and I believe senior Ahn Sung-ki will surely overcome this," making the scene solemn.
Support from fellow actors who have been with him for a long time has continued. In a past interview, Park Joong-hoon said, "Even when he was very ill, I cannot forget how he smiled and said 'thank you,'" showing his respect and affection for the senior.
Ahn Sung-ki, who stepped into acting at the age of five in 1957, has been an actor present at the major moments in Korean film history, from "A Windy Day" to "Whale Hunting", "The Southern Army", "White War", the "Two Cops" series, "Silmido", "Broken Arrow", and "Hansan: Rising Dragon."
