'You Quiz on the Block' Heo Kyunghwan confessed everything from what led him to start his business to being a victim of fraud.
On the 31st broadcast of the tvN entertainment show 'You Quiz on the Block' (hereafter 'You Quiz'), comedian Heo Kyunghwan, who marked his 19th anniversary since debut, appeared and was shown revealing that he had been a victim of fraud.
That day Heo Kyunghwan revealed the reason he started the chicken breast business in 2010. He said he produced catchphrases and established his position, but he thought he might not be able to do comedy for long.
Heo Kyunghwan said, "It was one of the instinctive struggles to survive. It was when I was on 'Bongsunga Academy'; after working out I was boiling chicken breast. Suddenly I thought I might not be able to do comedy for long. My colleagues prepared thoroughly before joining, crafting their comedy, while I relied on catchphrases; I wondered how I could make a living."
He recalled that the chicken breast he was boiling caught his eye and said, "There were only a few established brands. If I just started, wouldn't I at least rank fifth or sixth? I thought dieting would be something people keep doing for life. I visited factories and went to check the taste. I went around to find out."
Heo Kyunghwan, who said he developed the taste himself while touring factories at the time, said, "Back then there was only smoked chicken. The smoky flavor was too strong, so thinking about what flavors Koreans like, we configured three flavors: garlic, chili and original."
He also said he conducted taste tests with about 80 fellow comedians. Heo Kyunghwan explained, "Comedians have definite preferences. If they like it they say it's good; if not, they call it trash. So I deliberately didn't say I was doing it and asked as if a friend was doing it."
Having succeeded in business that way, Heo Kyunghwan became a CEO with annual sales of 30 billion won. But he said he became a victim of fraud by a business partner. He revealed, "I mistakenly thought, 'I'm doing broadcasts so they'll take care of it.' I should have checked carefully, but during that time that person developed other ideas."
Heo Kyunghwan, who said he rushed over after taking a call from the company during a comedians' golf gathering, said, "I met the factory representatives who were supposed to be paid there. They said they would sort it out somehow and give the money. That was when it started," revealing that he ended up shouldering debts of as much as 2.7 billion to 3.0 billion won.
Fortunately, he has now paid off the debt. In response, Heo Kyunghwan said, "People commonly call it a figurehead president. I didn't like being a figurehead, so I became the representative. After going through this, I tell many people to recommend a figurehead. Be a figurehead," he said, drawing laughter.
