Director Kim Jae-hyun expressed gratitude to Namkoong Min and Kim Ji-eun for their special appearances in Dynamite Kiss!
Recently, director Kim Jae-hyun, who directed and wrote Dynamite Kiss, and writers Ha Yoon-a and Tae Kyung-min shared their feelings about finishing the project and their reflections in a written interview.
Dynamite Kiss is a work that portrays the heartache romance between a single woman who disguises herself as a mother to make a living and the team leader who falls in love with her, and it concluded on the 25th. Dynamite Kiss gained great popularity, receiving praise for successfully reviving SBS weekday dramas and ranking first in weekday drama ratings overall for six consecutive weeks.
Director Kim Jae-hyun, when asked about working with Jang Ki-yong, Ahn Eun-jin and the many actors who supported the production with special appearances, said, "It's always an honor to work with wonderful actors. I send deep thanks and love to all the actors who trusted and followed an imperfect director."
One of the most eye-catching castings was seeing Namkoong Min and Kim Ji-eun, who had worked with director Kim Jae-hyun on the previous work One Dollar Lawyer, make special appearances in Dynamite Kiss as the same characters. When asked about the specific casting process, he mentioned, "I cautiously contacted senior Min and Ji-eun. Asking for a special appearance, and that too as a past character, honestly makes me feel a bit sorry as a director. It feels like holding back actors who need to move forward with new characters."
He said, "As far as I know, senior Min received countless offers for special appearances as the character Chun Ji-hoon. And he turned down those offers many times. Senior Min is someone who studies all night to create new characters," adding, "There is a passage I like in the Sutta Nipata: 'Go forth like a king who abandons the conquered lands.' Namkoong Min is someone who practices that passage literally. He repeatedly destroys and recreates himself and continually is reborn."
Despite that, director Kim Jae-hyun asked for their appearances. He revealed, "That made me feel even more sorry. But it was necessary for the script, so I selfishly asked. When I asked, 'Senior, can I ask for a special appearance?' senior Min replied, 'You're the director. Of course,' and accepted it gladly. I was very grateful."
He continued, "The same was true for actress Kim Ji-eun. Since 'Cheonbyeon,' she has constantly changed and flown wearing new characters, and that was very proud and pleasing to see. So asking her to make a special appearance as Mari felt like holding her back a lot," he confessed apologetically.
Director Kim Jae-hyun also said, "Two-thirds of the Dynamite Kiss staff are from the Cheonbyeon staff. Kim Hyun-woo, the co-director of Dynamite Kiss, was the assistant director on Cheonbyeon. Everyone's hearts were moved," conveying how they felt at the time.
So does their appearance mean we can expect production of One Dollar Lawyer season 2? Director Kim Jae-hyun said, "Many people are really hoping for One Dollar Lawyer season 2. I'm sorry, but the two special appearances are not spoilers for season 2." He added, "As an avid fan of One Dollar Lawyer myself, I also hope season 2 comes out. But if season 2 does come out, I think someone else will probably direct it."
