Singer DinDin again became the center of attention with his characteristically frank manner of speaking. After opening up about the hardships of being framed as a "thoughtful celebrity," his recent remarks on a YouTube variety show have spread into a "targeting controversy," sparking heated debate.
In a recent episode of the YouTube channel "Workman," "DinDin joins Workman," in which DinDin co-hosted with Lee Jun, DinDin mentioned the backlash that followed some of his past remarks. DinDin said, "After that remark, at some point the 'thoughtful celebrity' frame was put on me," and added, "Wherever I go people ask me to 'say something nice, give a sharp remark.' Since when was I the sharp-remark character? It was something I said while picking a fight," he said candidly.
He also laughed and recalled the short-lived buzz at the time, saying, "Back then PPLs started coming into my personal YouTube channel, but that hype didn't last even two weeks." DinDin said, "I only went because Jun hyung was doing it; I never thought it would blow up," and Lee Jun agreed, saying, "I didn't do anything more extreme than usual, so I didn't expect the reaction to be this big."
Earlier, in August on "Workman," DinDin and Lee Jun took low-cost coffee franchise part-time jobs, and when Lee Jun asked an actual employee, "Don't you make 10 million won a month?" DinDin snapped, "Celebrities have no sense of monetary value. They drive supercars and use expensive beds, so they lose their minds," which drew attention. That remark turned DinDin into the figure behind "thoughtful remarks" and "sincere remarks." Later, on Park Narae's YouTube show "Narae-sik," DinDin expressed a practical view, saying, "I don't understand why children's padded jackets use less fabric than adult ones but cost about the same," which earned sympathy.
Meanwhile, DinDin's remarks recently became the focus of controversy again. In the "Workman" episode released on the 26th, "3 million-won one-room vs. 7 billion-won Han River view apartment," DinDin and Lee Jun worked as one-day real estate brokerage assistants, and while being shown houses DinDin recalled his experience living in a Han River view officetel.
DinDin said frankly, "In winter it was too cold because of the river wind, and in summer it was tough because of the humidity," and added, "Personally, a Han River view wasn't that great." When Lee Jun asked, "Why do celebrities all seem to live with a Han River view?" DinDin joked, "To film 'I Live Alone,'" prompting laughter.
Although the remark was a light joke, some netizens later interpreted it as a targeted shot at certain variety shows or celebrities who have revealed Han River views, turning it into a controversy. With recent entertainment industry issues, some also say the intent of the remark is being excessively overinterpreted.
On the other hand, many viewers reacted that it was "just an honest joke from an experience" and "DinDin's characteristically blunt wit," saying it was not something to make a big deal out of. Many also evaluated that his unvarnished manner of speaking is part of DinDin's charm.
