U.S. immigration withdrawal remarks led to misunderstanding of "riding for free on Korea's medical system"…Oliver-ssam asks for correction, "that's not true"
American YouTuber Oliver-ssam, who has 2.25 million subscribers, directly explained himself after expressing the realistic difficulties of living as an immigrant in the U.S. and being swept into controversy over a "decision to go to Korea" and "riding for free on Korea's medical system" due to some reports.
On the 26th, Oliver-ssam posted a video titled "8th year immigrating to the U.S. with my Korean wife…I'm really giving up now" on his YouTube channel, revealing the realities of life in Texas.
In the video, he opened up about his deep concerns, mentioning high property taxes and home insurance premiums, worsening educational conditions, the risk of natural disasters from climate change, and structural problems in the medical system.
In particular, regarding the medical system, he cited the case of his father being diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer and pointed out the limits of the U.S. medical system, where tests are possible only after going through a primary care physician even if there are symptoms. Oliver-ssam confessed, "Seeing the reality that people get diagnosed only when it becomes terminal even when they're sick made me fearful that this could be my future."
However, as the video spread, some media outlets reported that he would "return to Korea" and "intend to use Korea's medical system," and criticism even arose calling it "medical freeloading."
On the 18th, Oliver-ssam presented his position directly through his YouTube channel. He emphasized, "I never said anywhere in the video that I had decided to go to Korea, nor did I mention Korea," and added, "I only shared the realistic problems and concerns we are experiencing in the U.S."
He appealed, "Because of incorrect articles, my family is being misunderstood as if we are trying to ride for free on Korea's medical system and receiving sharp comments," and asked, "Please publish a correction report as my family is already going through a very difficult time."
Meanwhile, it was reported that Oliver-ssam is currently staying in Texas with his family and spending as much time as possible with his father, who is battling terminal pancreatic cancer.
