Actor Hyunbin revisited the character from his breakout role "My Name Is Kim Sam-soon," evoking sympathy with a calm yet mature demeanor.
On the 27th, Hyunbin made a surprise guest appearance on the MBC variety show Omniscient Interfering View, delivering candid remarks along with unexpected humor. Even in his measured tone, his composure as he reflected on his past stood out.
That day Hyunbin recalled the moment he and his wife Son Ye-jin won the joint leading actor award at the Blue Dragon Film Awards last November and briefly said, "I was so happy to see my wife on stage." Even in understated words, sincerity showed through.
The conversation naturally turned to Hyunbin's breakout role "My Name Is Kim Sam-soon." When Pungja joked that after rewatching the series recently, "by today's standards the character Hyunbin played, 'Hyun Jin-heon,' looks like quite a problematic figure," Hyunbin did not deny it.
Hyunbin said frankly, "That's right. That character received a lot of criticism," and "Viewed from today's perspective, the character was clearly out of step with the times." His balanced attitude, neither glamorizing past popularity nor denying the work, was impressive.
Also, when Hong Hyun-hee, who is the same age born in 1982, mentioned that she attended a neighboring school during her student days and noted their acquaintance, Hyunbin candidly drew a line by saying, "We are not close," but added, "We can become close in the future," warming the set.
Netizen reactions after the broadcast were also favorable. Viewers expressed empathy with comments such as, "It's really cool that he can look at his work objectively," "He's not a performer who is loved for no reason for a long time," "He's honest but speaks with manners," "His attitude of respecting and acknowledging even past characters is dignified," and "A calm, mature answer befitting Hyunbin."
Meanwhile, Hyunbin married fellow actor Son Ye-jin in 2022, and in November of the same year they had a son.<
