"88-year-old actress" Kim Young-ok confessed to a range of life stories, from struggles with malicious comments to a grandson with lower-body paralysis.
On the 26th, a video titled "A grandmother who scraped together everything: actress Kim Young-ok's heartfelt confession" was uploaded to the YouTube channel "Yoon Mira."
Kim Young-ok said, "I have just lived like water flowing. Not resisting things has been a good thing. I am 88 by international age, and I can do YouTube like this for two more years. After turning 90 I think, 'Did I go too far? I should be a little more careful,'" adding, "The happiest thing is that I spent my life working as an actress. It's also a joy that there is no mandatory retirement age (Jeongnyeon: The Star is Born)."
Recalling the years she has lived as an actress, she said, "I have heard many compliments, but there are antis as well. Occasionally people say nastily, 'Stop being so extreme now,'" and she opened up about the pain caused by malicious comments. She said, "If someone kindly said, 'How about taking a rest now,' I would understand that too."
Kim Young-ok mentioned her grandson, who became paralyzed on one side after an unexpected traffic accident, and her parting from her daughter, saying, "I think I was scolded when I was 79. As we age, my grandson is sick and I am sick. We do not know what tomorrow will bring."
Junior Yoon Mira expressed respect, saying, "She built her early and middle years well and bloomed in her later years. Someone like a teacher is admirable," but Kim Young-ok reflected, "You cannot say the later years are only good. No one's family life is entirely smooth," adding, "Elderly people used to say, 'Don't speak loudly before placing your hand on the boat,' but when someone is about to die we put our hands together. That is how funerals are. Until then, because you don't know what will happen, it's a warning to be careful. That's how life is. Things happen that make you think, 'Something like this could happen to me too.'''
Mentioning her grandson who became paralyzed in the lower body from a traffic accident and her parting from her daughter, Kim Young-ok said, "Now that we are old, the grandfather is sick and I am sick too. I do not know what will happen to me tomorrow. Getting older does not mean you know everything about life, and not being old does not mean you know nothing," adding, "I devoted two-thirds of my life to this work. Sometimes I reflect on whether I treated my children and husband well. Now I am just living doing my best."
That day Kim Young-ok sang Hyun-chul's 'Sitting or standing, I think of you' in front of Yoon Mira, and overwhelmed by many passing thoughts she ultimately shed tears.
Meanwhile, Kim Young-ok appeared on Channel A's "Oh Eun-young's Golden Counseling Center" last year and surprised viewers by revealing that she has been caring for her grandson, who became paralyzed in the lower body due to a drunk-driving traffic accident, for eight years. Kim Young-ok's grandson was injured in 2015 while waiting for a taxi on the street when an unlicensed drunken driver plowed onto the sidewalk and struck him. Kim Young-ok said, "I really resent the driver," adding, "He damaged his spine so his lungs are weak and he cannot use his lower body. He is very severely injured."
The grandson, who had been in a coma, regained consciousness after about a year, but Kim Young-ok's daughter's health worsened from the prolonged caregiving, and ultimately Kim Young-ok took care of the grandson herself. She said, "I tell my daughter, 'Endure it for the sake of your son.' I worry most about my daughter's illness and pray every day," adding, "I desperately hope my grandson can just hang on like this without anything happening to him."
