English education YouTuber Oliver Sam, who has 2.25 million subscribers, has decided to leave the United States.
On the 27th, according to the entertainment industry and others, Oliver Sam posted a video titled "Eight years into U.S. immigration with my Korean wife… now I'm really giving up" on the YouTube channel "Oliver Sam."
In the video, Oliver Sam said, "Many people may think the United States is fine (economically) because it's a major power, but in reality it isn't," citing taxes, public education, and health care.
Oliver Sam said, "Starting in 2026, we have to pay $8,000 in property tax (about 11.56 million won)," and "the homeowners insurance premium is $4,402 (about 6.37 million won)."
He went on to say that America's public education is collapsing rapidly. Oliver Sam's wife said, "In fact, school budgets have been cut a lot," and explained, "Unlicensed ordinary people are filling in for teachers."
Oliver Sam's wife also expressed dissatisfaction with the U.S. health care system. She said, "My grandfather was diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer," and, "No matter how much we wanted him to get tests, he couldn't get them."
She added, "We're paying about 4 million won a month in premiums, and I don't even know why we have to be treated like this. This is just a place where if you get sick, you disappear like a consumable."
Oliver Sam also raised climate change as an issue. Oliver Sam said, "In Texas, summer temperatures top 40 degrees Celsius," and, "Two weeks before giving birth, there was a power crisis and everything stopped. About 300 people died then."
Meanwhile, Oliver Sam, an American, worked as an English instructor in Korea before switching to YouTube. He is said to have moved his residence to the United States after marrying his Korean wife in 2016.
