Even though 10 years have passed, the unchanging friendship and chemistry of the Ssangmundong families and their unexpected moments of growth moved viewers and evoked memories, while teasing a surprise guest.
On the 26th, the tvN variety show Reply 1988 10th anniversary special episode 2 depicted the Ssangmundong families reuniting in one place for the first time in 10 years since the finale.
In the earlier broadcast, the main figures who led the Reply 1988 phenomenon — Seong Dong Il, Lee Ilhwa, Ra Miran, Kim Sung-kyun, Ryu Hyeyoung, Park Bo Gum, Ko Kyung-pyo, Ahn Jaehong, Ryu Jun-yeol and Hyeri — all appeared, triggering viewers' memories with a company dinner scene that summoned Ssangmundong of 1988 exactly as it was.
Despite busy schedules, the actors gathered for a 2 Days & 1 Night MT in Gangwon Province appeared in fashions that recalled their characters, showing warm chemistry as if time had stopped. With reactions saying "it's just like that time," the scene was filled with laughter and greetings from the start.
On the ride to the lodging, Park Bo Gum set the playlist and lifted the mood. At Park Bo Gum's remark that "all our OSTs are good," Ra Miran admired, "How come you all sing so well?," and Lee Dong-hwi praised Park Bo Gum, saying, "He even plays the piano well for the songs." In response, Park Bo Gum surprised everyone by confessing, "My original dream was to be a singer-songwriter," recalling that before becoming an actor he had dreamed of being a singer. He said humbly, "I auditioned by filming myself playing the piano and singing, and they told me I suited being an actor more than a singer," adding, "Now that I can do both, I feel like I've achieved my dream and I'm grateful."
Also, Seong Dong Il made a surprise entrance to the car carrying a box of dried persimmons and received cheers from the family. He said contentedly, "I spent ten thousand won on a full meal and bought a box of dried persimmons," and when he asked Hyeri and Ryu Hyeyoung, "Is there anyone among the other families you want to give them to?," Hyeri answered, "Taek (Park Bo Gum)," and Ryu Hyeyoung said, "Sunwoo (Ko Kyung-pyo)." Seong Dong Il burst out laughing, saying, "Why do only your own partners act like that?"
Finally arriving at the lodging with an MT banner, the members took poster photos again after 10 years. Hyeri called Park Bo Gum "Bogum-i" as he went to fix his hair and took care of him attentively, and instead of Ryu Jun-yeol who stood beside Hyeri in the original poster 10 years ago, Park Bo Gum filled that spot this time, drawing attention.
Even during game time, Park Bo Gum's "conscience character" shone. Explaining tteokbokki, he used the phrase "made from rice cakes," and when asked to confess his conscience he eventually revealed the truth and earned the nickname "the conscience of the era." As he continued to give seniors chances to answer questions, Seong Dong Il said, "Bogum is pushing the seniors forward," with pride, and Yoo Jae-myung, who was on the same team, said, "Enough being nice now," prompting bursts of laughter.
Above all, the appearance of the "unexpected guest" revealed in the trailer moved everyone to tears. When Jinju, who was a baby 10 years ago, appeared having grown up dramatically, Hyeri and the Ssangmundong family members said, "We couldn't even imagine it," reddening their eyes, and the scene instantly became a sea of tears.<
