Actor Kim Mu-jun mentioned the process of joining Dynamite Kiss and opened up about his character.
On the afternoon of the 23rd, actor Kim Mu-jun met OSEN at a cafe in Cheongdam-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, and conducted a final-episode interview for the SBS Wednesday-Thursday drama Dynamite Kiss.
Kim Mu-jun played Kim Seon-woo, Darim (Ahn Eun-jin)'s close friend and a single-dad photographer. Kim Seon-woo, who raises his 6-year-old son alone and runs a baby studio, is a kind and sensitive person who, by circumstance, ends up posing as Darim's pretend husband.
Asked whether he felt the popularity of Dynamite Kiss, Kim Mu-jun said, "I am grateful that it has been loved much more than expected. There isn't any particular point that I can tangibly feel yet. I can see my SNS follower count, but there's nothing like I did this or that," he said.
He said he was the first among the Dynamite Kiss cast to be cast, and when asked what the director saw in him to cast him, "I didn't ask exactly, and the director didn't go into details. One thing the director said was that the character Seon-woo has an internal pain in his backstory, and sadness and pain showed in his eyes. So I heard that the director felt this friend could show that kind of side," he said.
Are there scenes where Kim Mu-jun himself came through while actually portraying Seon-woo? He said, "If I were to point out similarities between Seon-woo and me, I think the affectionate and tender side comes through. That was similar, and things like wiping Darim's mouth when she eats or taking care of her first seem similar to my personality. There were also parts I felt newly while filming," he confessed.
Asked what he felt newly, Kim Mu-jun described that Seon-woo married young, had a child, and divorced. He also has wounds from his wife's infidelity. He is a character who raises a child alone, has to earn money, and so on, but his 20-year friend Darim also takes care of Jun, and that likely entered naturally," he said.
Referring to the scene in which Seon-woo confesses to Darim, Kim Mu-jun recalled, "In the end he confesses. Although it was edited in the drama, I confess while shedding tears. There are cuts where tears flow and cuts where they don't, but at that moment before the line 'If I let you go I'll regret it,' I was staring ahead, and when that line came I looked at nuna's face but couldn't speak. I choked up and stayed still for a minute," he recalled.
He continued, "Tears rolled and words came out, so I wondered what that emotion was. Feeling that point was new. What is this? It wasn't calculated or discussed at all, it just happened, so those were new experiences," adding, "It's not even in the script directions. There was nothing related to sadness," he said.
Compared with Kim Seon-woo's unrequited love, what kind of person is Kim Mu-jun in real life? He said, "If it's unrequited love, I don't think I could confess unless the other person liked me back. Kim Mu-jun might be a bit scary and very fearful," and added, "If the other person is a 20-year close friend, I think I would be even less able to do it, and even with someone I met for the first time it would be hard. I don't think I would have the courage."
He added, "When you love someone, even if you don't confess... I think you can't hide it. It shows in your eyes, and if a friend says they like someone, it shows. I think it will show. Isn't the feeling called love that scary?"
When asked what he thought about the male-friend/female-friend relationship, he laughed and said, "I am of the school that there is 'absolutely none.' I think it can't be just friends. It's a 'man and woman' school of thought, but when I actually think about friends I've known for 10 years, I also feel there might be such a thing."
So if, like in Dynamite Kiss, a close friend asked him to act as a 'husband substitute,' what would Kim Mu-jun do? He said, "If I were single I think I would do it. If I were single I think I would do it, but if I were a couple or married I don't think I could. If I'm single, I'd gladly do it for a close friend. In other situations it's not possible," he said firmly.
