(continuing from interview ①) Actress Kim Da-mi shared her thoughts on playing the role of "mother".
On the 22nd, an interview with Kim Da-mi, actress of the Netflix film "The Great Flood," was held at a cafe in Samcheong-dong, Seoul.
"The Great Flood" is an SF disaster blockbuster that depicts the struggle of those who place humanity's last hope on the line as they fight for survival inside an APT. submerged apartment as it floods on the last day the flood strikes the Earth. Director Kim Byung-woo, who has been praised for his delicate direction that handles the multilayered emotions of characters placed in extreme situations in works such as "The Terror Live" and "PMC: The Bunker," directed the film and took the helm.
Kim Da-mi plays Anna, an artificial intelligence researcher and humanity's last hope, who transforms into a mother protecting her 6-year-old son, vividly portraying Anna's constantly growing and changing aspects as she fulfills her responsibilities as an artificial intelligence researcher.
When asked how she felt seeing Kim Da-mi as a "mother" on screen, Kim Da-mi said, "At first I also felt my own appearance was a bit awkward. In fact, some of my close friends already have children. When you see them there are moments of 'how are they already mothers?' (After acting) I thought that, in real age terms, it isn't necessarily an awkward point to become a mother. I also, thanks to Eun-seong, gradually learned the feelings of being a mother and seemed to become a bit more proficient, which appears in the latter part of the film."
She also talked about the feelings of "mother" she came to feel through filming. Kim Da-mi said, "A feeling that moves the body before you think. I felt that a mother thinking of me is a mother's heart. Even before you think 'should I do this, should I do that,' you just go straight away. My mother would probably come right away if I were in such a situation. In that way, I think I came to understand (my mother) a bit."
She added, "Since I have not given birth yet, I wondered to myself, 'Will I be the kind of mother who can give this much love later? Am I someone who can do that?' So the conclusion was, I think current mothers are amazing," she joked.
In particular, Kim Da-mi also responded to the mixed reactions to how the film handles "maternal love." Kim Da-mi said, "Actually, while it is maternal love, I thought the movie ultimately speaks about 'love.' Maternal love is part of love. Whether husband and wife or friends, I felt the film wanted to say that the feeling humans most feel and should have as humans is love. Maternal love exists within that. I think it can be expressed by the word maternal love."
