Broadcaster Park Mi-seon's group purchase while fighting breast cancer has prompted a fierce debate among netizens. Despite her plea to "consult with your attending physician," some have criticized her as irresponsible, while others have defended her, saying the criticism is excessive.
On the 20th, Park Mi-seon announced on her social media, "When I was sick, the most important thing was eating well. But choosing and eating good things was harder than I thought," and announced a group purchase of blueberry concentrate. She also released a video showing herself consuming the product.
Fans, worried about her health, reacted, "Don't do stressful things and focus only on treatment," and "Shouldn't rest come first?," and Park Mi-seon candidly explained why she started the group purchase, saying, "I get bored because I'm always resting," and "I'm very happy right now."
But the level of criticism grew. Some netizens fired sharp comments such as, "Does someone who has nothing to lack go into business now? Health and life are paramount; greed brings trouble," "It's sad to sell things during chemotherapy," "I heard berries are bad for breast cancer," and "I supported you, but it's a group purchase after all?"
Park Mi-seon responded directly in the comments, "Thank you for your concern. But I'm bored of always resting," "My chemotherapy is over. I'm currently in a rest period," and "I've eaten it, but just in case, please be sure to ask your attending physician," explaining the situation.
However, despite this explanation, another controversy flared up. Some netizens expressed concern, saying, "It's actually irresponsible for an influential person to only say 'consult with your attending physician,'" and "It could confuse patients."
On the other hand, voices of support were not insignificant. Comments of encouragement continued, such as, "She has worked diligently her whole life; let her do what she wants at a gentle pace," "She may simply want to share something good, so don't be so harsh," and "It's nice to see her trying to return to everyday life while recovering."
As the controversy grew, Park Mi-seon issued another statement on the 21st. She bowed her head and said, "Thank you all for worrying and scolding me. I will take good care of my health. I started this as I tried to slowly return to daily life after treatment was over, and I'm sorry if it made you uncomfortable." She added, "I thought it was clearly something good to share, but I ask fellow patients to consult with their attending physician before deciding." Meanwhile, earlier this year Park Mi-seon suspended broadcasting activities for health reasons and later directly revealed she had been diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer and was undergoing treatment, receiving much support.
