On the 20th (Sat) broadcast of the tvN weekend drama PROBONO (written by Moon Yoo-seok/ directed by Kim Seong-yoon/ planned by Studio Dragon/ produced by Sequence One, Lotte Cultureworks, Studio Flow) episode 5, Kang Da-wit (Jung Kyung-ho) revealed one by one the hidden story of Kaya (Jung Hye-rin), a woman in an international marriage, with his extraordinary intuition.
That day, after receiving a request from Kaya that she wanted a divorce because of repeated suspicions of her husband's infidelity and verbal abuse, the PROBONO team visited the area where the client lived and closely examined Kaya's situation. Then, when they visited Kaya's in-laws, the PROBONO team, having confirmed the husband's coercive attitude, agreed to take the case.
And immediately after it began, Kang Da-wit displayed sharp powers of observation. He noted that, contrary to neighbors' stories that Kaya usually preferred light clothing, the Kaya he had recently seen had consistently been dressed with her body well covered. Having noticed this small difference, Kang Da-wit met with Kaya in person, confirmed the suspected parts of the truth, and discovered signs of serious assault.
Accordingly, Kang Da-wit presented the husband's repeated suspicions, verbal abuse and threats as grounds that made it difficult to continue the marriage, emphasizing the validity of the divorce lawsuit. The husband's side, on the other hand, drew a line, saying there had been no excessive abuse, and the mother-in-law also rebutted, calling it a plot to get a divorce.
In the midst of fierce courtroom battles, a turning point came with new testimony the PROBONO team secured. Among the villagers who had been avoiding testimony out of fear of the county governor's family, Jang Young-sil (Yoon Na-mu) succeeded in persuading the village chief by consoling him with her experience of having lived abroad as a child.
The village chief who testified said that one day Kaya's husband brought the collapsed Kaya to the animal hospital he runs. He also submitted photos of the scene as evidence, conveying how desperate the situation had been. With these testimonies and evidence added, Kaya's divorce claim also became sufficiently persuasive in court.
But at that moment, Kang Da-wit suddenly made the decision to stop the lawsuit. He felt something was off because Kaya's attitude—wanting a divorce yet subtly defending her husband—and some of the circumstances did not align. After reconstructing the circumstantial evidence revealed so far, Kang Da-wit realized that the real reason Kaya wanted a divorce lay with her father-in-law, not her husband.
Afterward, as Kang Da-wit had anticipated, clear evidence proving the despicable acts the county governor, the father-in-law, had committed against Kaya was presented one after another, revealing the substance of the case, and the county governor was immediately arrested. When asked why she had hidden the facts until now, Kaya said she thought leaving quietly was best because the people who had reached out to help her live in Korea had been the reason she could leave her hometown, leaving a heart-wrenching impression.
But at the end of the broadcast, the lawsuit, which seemed to be wrapping up smoothly, took another twist with the appearance of Woo Myung-hoon (Choi Dae-hoon). He claimed the marriage was void, saying Kaya had hidden the fact she had given birth in her hometown before marriage. With a new phase of annulment rather than divorce opening, the sense of crisis over Kaya's whereabouts intensified.
