The shocking recent condition of an elementary school student who had even been nicknamed 'zombie' because of gaming addiction was revealed again.
On the 19th, Channel A 'These days' parenting - My precious child' aired the year-end special part 2 'On-site raid! Has the son with gaming addiction changed?'.
The second protagonist of this year-end special is the sixth-grade elementary student Geumjok, who previously appeared on episodes 258 and 259. At the time, Geumjok shocked viewers by staying up all night, delaying meals and even bathroom breaks as he became excessively immersed in games while his day and night were completely reversed.
In that broadcast, Geumjok secretly continued computer games into the early morning without being able to fall asleep, and the shock deepened as obscene insults, theft and signs of cyberbullying during games were revealed.
When Dr. Oh Eun-young's solution initiated a full-scale digital detox, Geumjok reacted strongly, attempting to run away from home and showing self-harming behavior. Afterward he seemed to calm down for a while, but suddenly said, "Am I the only one hearing auditory hallucinations?" and claimed to hear a cellphone alarm, creating tension once again.
On the seventh day after stopping gaming, Geumjok showed excessive sleepiness. Even though he slept more than 10 hours a day from 10 p.m. to 8 a.m., he remained drowsy throughout the daytime. Worried that another problem might exist, the producers and experts conducted a sleep test.
With multiple wires connected to his head, Geumjok entered sleep observation and fell asleep calmly one hour after the test began, but suddenly sprang up and made meaningless sounds. Even after three hours he woke up shouting, and at the six-hour mark abnormal behaviors repeated, such as sitting dazedly after waking or accidentally urinating.
After reviewing the sleep analysis results, the specialist opened with, "There are many worrisome aspects." He continued, "Normally when you fall asleep stable brain waves appear, but this child's brain waves remain unstable," and explained, "Because of this, he frequently wakes even while sleeping."
Geumjok had no memory whatsoever of these abnormal behaviors during sleep. The specialist expressed concern, saying, "This is not an event that occurs once in a while but happens repeatedly throughout the night," and added, "In short, it is not a true sleeping state but appears as if he is 'pretending to sleep.' Among the children I have seen recently, this is a quite serious case."
Dr. Oh Eun-young said, "Due to gaming addiction, the pleasure and dopamine reward circuits have been excessively strengthened," and explained, "When dopamine is activated, the brain remains overly aroused." She added, "When trying to sleep, a reaction to become aroused again appears. Although it may look like he is sleeping, the brain is not resting and continues to work."
Dr. Oh Eun-young also warned, "It is no different from an adult collapsing from long-term overwork. It is extremely dangerous for a growing child for this condition to persist," delivering a shock. <
