Actor Ryu Jun-yeol and Hyeri ultimately did not reunite at the Reply 1988 10th anniversary gathering. Attention focused on the failed meeting between the two, who once developed into lovers through the drama and continued their relationship for eight years.
Earlier, tvN's Reply 1988 prepared a special MT where the Ssangmun-dong families would gather in one place to mark the 10th anniversary of its airing. As soon as the news spread, fans naturally poured out expectations that "Ryu Jun-yeol and Hyeri might meet again." In fact, the two were noted as a possibility for their first simultaneous attendance at an official event since officially confirming their breakup in March.
But before the broadcast, tvN said, "Ryu Jun-yeol could not take part in the entire MT due to scheduling, but considering the meaning of the 10th anniversary content he participated only in some of the filming," hinting that the two appearing together was practically unlikely. At the time, Ryu Jun-yeol was busy with the schedule of filming the Netflix movie "Deuljwi."
Nevertheless, Ryu Jun-yeol's image was captured in photos Hyeri took with a film camera, and the subtle distance that they were in the same place but not captured in the same frame became a hot topic.
On the Reply 1988 10th anniversary special broadcast on the 19th, the cast's 2 Days & 1 Night trip to Gangwon-do was revealed. Ryu Jun-yeol made a surprise appearance in the opening shoot to express his delight, but due to an early exit because of his schedule, a direct encounter with Hyeri ultimately did not occur.
As soon as he appeared, shouts and cheers of "You said you couldn't come!" poured out, and Ryu Jun-yeol greeted them with an embarrassed smile. He said, "The next shoot was nearby so I wanted to see faces even for a moment," showing loyalty even if only for a short time.
The broadcast also drew laughter with the reunion scene between Hyeri and Ssangmun-dong father Seong Dong-il. Upon seeing Hyeri, Seong Dong-il joked with his characteristic humor, calling her a "phony X," turning the scene into a sea of laughter. He then showed his "tsundere father" side by saying to the three siblings (Hyeri, Ryu Hye-young, Choi Sung-won), "Those who never contact me in their lifetime, sit down!"
When asked, "Who contacts most often?" he answered decisively, "No one (종)," while also expressing sincere affection for the actors, saying, "It's better for each to live diligently in their own place than to be contacted often."
Although the Ryu Jun-yeol and Hyeri "10th anniversary reunion" did not happen, the Reply 1988 team's warm friendship, with actors who have grown in their respective places gathering again, offered a heartwarming moment.
