While broadcaster Park Su-hong's older brother Mr. Park is on trial on embezzlement charges, he was sentenced in the appellate court to 3 years and 6 months in prison, a heavier sentence than the original court.
On the 19th, the Seoul High Court, 7th Criminal Division (B) held a sentencing hearing in the appeal for Park Su-hong's older brother Mr. Park and his sister-in-law Ms. Lee, who were indicted on charges of embezzlement under the Act on the Aggravated Punishment, etc. of Specific Economic Crimes (embezzlement).
At the appellate hearing that day, the panel sentenced Mr. Park to 3 years and 6 months in prison and, judging there was a risk of flight, issued an arrest warrant and ordered him detained in court.
The sister-in-law Ms. Lee, who had been acquitted in the first trial, was also found partially guilty and was sentenced to 1 year in prison, with a 2-year suspended sentence and ordered to perform 120 hours of community service. Immediately after the verdict, Ms. Lee left the courtroom and was seen sobbing.
Meanwhile, Mr. Park was handed over for trial in October 2022 on charges of diverting about 6.17 billion won of company funds and his younger brother's personal funds while managing Park Su-hong's management exclusively for about 10 years from 2011 to 2021. His sister-in-law Ms. Lee was also indicted without detention on charges of participating in some of the embezzlement. On Feb. 1 last year, the first trial recognized only the charge that Mr. Park embezzled 200 million won of company funds and sentenced Mr. Park to 2 years in prison while acquitting Ms. Lee.<
