Actor Kwak Do-won apologized in person three years after committing a drunk driving incident.
Kwak Do-won said on the morning of the 19th, "It took a long time to write this. I was afraid, I was very embarrassed, and I could not easily say anything in the face of my wrongdoing. First, I would like to once again offer my deep apologies to everyone who was hurt and disappointed by my wrongdoing," he said.
He continued, "In 2022 I committed the grave wrongdoing of drunk driving. I sincerely apologize to everyone who was hurt and disappointed by that." He added, "Since that incident I have reflected on myself and spent countless hours asking myself whether I deserve to stand before people. During the time when the world quieted down, I deeply contemplated what kind of attitude I should live with as a person before acting. I have only now realized that all the things I took for granted were never things to be taken for granted."
He also said, "I watched the works that were released in the meantime and the drama that recently began airing and thought a lot. I am truly sorry for not apologizing sooner for my wrongdoing and for missing the right time to state my position," and added, "Before resuming activities, I will steadily prove through actions the responsible 모습을 I failed to show. I will not try to beg for forgiveness quickly. I will prove it by my life, not by words."
Finally, Kwak Do-won added, "I sincerely apologize once again to everyone I disappointed. Thank you for reading this to the end."
Earlier, Kwak Do-won was caught by police in September 2022 while driving under the influence. At the time, the Jeju Western Police Station said it had referred Kwak Do-won to prosecutors on charges of drunk driving (violation of the Road Traffic Act). It also handed over a man in his 30s, identified as A, who accompanied him, to prosecutors on charges of assisting drunk driving (aiding drunk driving) for knowingly assisting the drunk driving.
At the time, it was confirmed that around 4 a.m. Kwak Do-won picked up a friend in his 30s, A, who had been drinking with him at a bar in Geumneung-ri, Hallim-eup, Jeju City, and gave him a ride in his SUV. After dropping A off nearby, he fell asleep in the car while waiting at a traffic signal on a road in Aewol-eup, and was caught by police following a resident's report that the driver appeared to have been drinking.
His blood alcohol concentration was especially revealed to be 0.158%, about twice the license cancellation level (0.08%).
Later, in April 2023, the Jeju District Prosecutors' Office summary-indicted Kwak Do-won, who had been referred to prosecutors on charges of violating the Road Traffic Act, to pay a fine of 10 million won.
