Actor Kim Dong-gyu rose to prominence as a promising newcomer with distinctive character portrayal in his first historical drama since his debut.
Kim Dong-gyu left a strong impression on viewers playing Han-seong, a Sungkyunkwan student with a warm visual who harbors a tender love for a woman, in the MBC Friday-Saturday drama Moon River, which is set to conclude on the 20th.
Han-seong is a character who, from birth, is destined to be tied by a red thread called hongyeon that invisibly binds lovers together; he instinctively senses that the gisaeng Hong-nan (played by Park A-in), whom he meets by chance in the marketplace, is that destined partner and feels an unusual emotion, and he is the older brother of Crown Princess Yeon-wol (played by Kim Se-jeong), who lives a life of hardship.
Kim Dong-gyu portrayed Han-seong by conveying deep affection and tender looks toward Hong-nan, a connection that cannot be realized in this life due to differences in status and circumstances, and he captured attention by expressing his love for Hong-nan in both facial expressions and lines at the moment when the royal physician assassinated the queen and the family faced threats and impending death.
Also, in a situation where he had no choice but to die while leaving behind his beloved sister Yeon-wol, whom he wanted to live happily with for a long time, he entrusted Hong-nan with his sister's well-being before leaving, portraying wrenching sorrow with a muted, heartbreaking quality and leaving a strong impression.
In this way, Kim Dong-gyu drew attention with his distinctive character portrayal, and despite his brief appearance he acquired the epithets "Kim Se-jeong's older brother" and "Hong-nan's man." In addition, his intellectual aura and tall visuals, which increased the synchronicity with the Sungkyunkwan student Han-seong, captured attention every time he appeared, making him acclaimed as a next-generation acting prospect.
Kim Dong-gyu said, I was grateful to participate in my first historical drama with Moon River, and added, It was a truly valuable experience where I learned a lot on set. He added, I will work hard to grow further based on this experience.
Kim Dong-gyu, who made his acting debut in the web drama "Some Boiling Time," steadily built his filmography appearing in "The Wind That Blows in Jeju," and tvN D's "Essential Love Etiquette," among others. This time, through Moon River, he proved his potential for growth, drawing attention to his next steps.
Meanwhile, Moon River, which powerfully captures the charm of newcomer Kim Dong-gyu, will air its final episode on the 20th at 9:40 p.m.<
