Elon Musk is facing a strong backlash on social media over a post that referred to actress Sydney Sweeney's body.
According to the Daily Mail on the 18th (local time), Musk shared a red carpet video of Sydney Sweeney on his social media platform X (formerly Twitter) and posted content that evoked her body. The post was in response to reactions about the outfit Sweeney wore at the premiere of the film "The Housemaid" held in Los Angeles, U.S., on the 16th.
Sweeney attracted attention on the red carpet that day wearing a white dress with a deep neckline and feather trim. However, Musk added expressions to the video, along with AI-generated images, that seemed to imply physical discomfort, which immediately drew criticism as inappropriate.
Netizens in particular took issue with the fact that Musk referred to the body of a woman in her 20s and that he has made controversial remarks about young female celebrities in the past. One user criticized, "Is that something you should say to someone nearly 30 years younger?" and said, "It's uncomfortable to see," while another reacted, "What on earth are you doing here?"
Some netizens recalled Musk's problematic remarks toward Taylor Swift and pointed out, "This is not the first time." Criticism continued, saying, "He joked before that he'd 'let her have a child,' and now he again made a bodily comment about another young woman."
Sydney Sweeney's camp has not yet issued an official statement regarding Musk's post. Online, however, the majority of reactions said, "This is beneath what you'd expect from a billionaire CEO," and "As a public figure, he showed a lack of responsibility."
Meanwhile, in a recent interview, Sydney Sweeney drew a line against excessive attention to her appearance and body, expressing that she wants to be judged by her acting and work as an actress. Analysts say the current controversy again raises questions about the boundaries of attention and remarks regarding the appearance of famous female actors.
