'If We' actor Koo Kyo-hwan shared his thoughts on acting in a melodrama opposite junior Moon Ga-young, who is 14 years younger.
On the afternoon of the 18th at CGV Yongsan I'Park Mall in Seoul, a press screening for the film 'If We' was held. The event was attended by lead actors Koo Kyo-hwan, Moon Ga-young, and director Kim Do-young.
The film 'If We' (director Kim Do-young, distributed by SHOWBOX, provided by KC Ventures·KWave Media, produced by Covenant Pictures) is a realistic romantic film that unfolds the traces of memory when Eun-ho and Jeong-won, who once loved each other passionately, accidentally reunite after 10 years. It is a remake of the original Chinese film 'Us in the Future' (2018), adapted to Korean sensibilities.
Director Kim Do-young, who drew attention for his delicate emotional direction in 'Kim Ji-young, Born 1982' (2019), returns with a new work that raises expectations with the intense acting chemistry and poignant rapport between Koo Kyo-hwan and Moon Ga-young. It realistically captures the radiant moments of youth in their 20s and the emotional changes the two face when they meet again after 10 years.
Koo Kyo-hwan passionately plays Eun-ho, who, after failing university entrance exams multiple times, is enrolled in a computer engineering program and meets his first love Jeong-won. From the thrill of first love that everyone experiences to the regret that follows a breakup, he detailed and realistically expresses complex emotions that are expected to broaden audience empathy. He returns with the most profound love story of his career.
Having shown mostly bromances with male actors for a while, Koo Kyo-hwan said, "I greeted many viewers with 'Peninsula,' but if I tell you my secret filmography before that, I was a 'melodrama craftsman.' (laughter) After 'Peninsula' I was curious about genre films, and after that curiosity I felt a thirst again," adding, "It's not like, 'Now I must play a melodrama character!' I thought let's portray people around us. While I was pondering that, I worked on the director's project, and I filmed it happily and well," he said.
Koo Kyo-hwan and Moon Ga-young are actually 14 years apart, but in the film they appear as university classmates. On this, Koo Kyo-hwan said, "I trust the team regarding the age difference. And I trust the makeup. (laughter) I also trusted the director's scene direction and thought we would create it together," adding, "There is also a character in the film of my age. It's not just me creating the character alone, so I trusted and trusted continuously. I'm curious how you saw the final result today," he said with a smile.
