'Culinary Class Wars2' has fully unveiled its curtain, and the performances of star chefs are already drawing attention.
On the 16th, Netflix entertainment 'Culinary Class Wars: Culinary Class Wars2' was released; it is a program in which underground masters called 'black spoons' chefs who try to overturn class by taste alone and Korea's top star chefs 'white spoons' engage in fiery battles.
Last year's airing of 'Culinary Class Wars' was a sensational hit, so naturally attention was focused on the white-spoon chefs appearing in season 2. As some have said it felt like casting without regard for season 3, Michelin two-star Lee Jun, Korea's first temple cuisine master Ven. Seonjae, 57-year Chinese cuisine master Hu Deok-juk, 'Korean Cuisine Battle 3' winner Lim Seong-geun, Michelin one-star Kim Hee-eun, former Blue House executive chef Cheon Sang-hyun and other white-spoon chefs who are hard to see elsewhere appeared in large numbers and drew attention.
What led the early stages of the black-spoons' cooking battles was unexpectedly the white-spoons' banter. Familiar to viewers, Son Jong-won, Song Hoon, Jung Ho-young, Sam Kim, Raymond Kim and others were listed in the white-spoon lineup and showed generous reactions while watching the black-spoons' cooking.
They cheered for people they were friendly with and shared regret at eliminations. In particular, when 'French Papa,' who had stepped away from work temporarily for his son's treatment, appeared as a black spoon, several chefs cheered, saying, 'Brother, fighting, you'll do well,' and in interviews with production staff they also expressed the wish, 'I hope he climbs up a bit.'
Chef Kim Hee-eun was so nervous that she covered her ears while her protégé 'baby beast' was being judged. When 'baby beast' survived, she was the first to shout 'Wow!' and clap, shouting 'Well done! Kim Si-hyun,' proving once again that 'Culinary Class Wars' is not a simple competition program.
A new rule appeared in 'Culinary Class Wars2.' The reason white-spoon chefs appeared as 18 rather than 20 was because of this. Season 1 white-spoon chefs Kim Do-yun and Choi Kang-rok appeared as 'hidden white spoons' and once again faced off in cooking battles.
In the case of the 'hidden white spoon,' both judges Paik Jong-won and Anh Sung-jae must accept them, and if they survive the number of successful black spoons also increases. If Kim Do-yun and Choi Kang-rok both pass, the number of surviving black spoons becomes 20, not 18.
In this process, Choi Kang-rok's courage in bringing a braised dish again stood out. Borrowing the black-spoon chefs' expression 'throw away the oars when the tide comes in,' Choi Kang-rok focused solely on cooking and reminded viewers once more that the essence of a star chef is cooking, not broadcasting.
As the 19 black-spoon and white-spoon chefs who advanced competed one-on-one, among the white-spoon chefs Son Jong-won's dish reached viewers first. Competing with the theme 'beef tongue from Wonju, Gangwon Province,' Son Jong-won used the full 80 minutes and naturally showed the 'nice guy' aspect he revealed on 'Naengbu' on 'Culinary Class Wars' as well.
Son Jong-won, who operated Korea's first restaurant serving both Korean and Western cuisine and received Michelin one star for each, backed up his weighty line with his cooking: 'I've also worked at three three-star restaurants, but the three-star places I worked at didn't make me three-star. I have to make my star myself. Can you stop me?'
Accordingly, contrary to concerns, 'Culinary Class Wars2' took first place in 'Today's Korea TOP10 series' on the 17th after just half a day, showing its continued presence. As the full-scale cooking war between white spoons and black spoons has begun, 'Culinary Class Wars2' is released every Tuesday.<
