From romance to human drama, a variety of genres of Korean films are preparing to hit theaters at the end of the year, and the film 'Sinui Akdan' (director: Kim Hyung-hyeop | distributor: CJ CGV㈜ | production: Studio Target㈜) is ready to win over year-end audiences with its singular scale and weighty message.
This year-end box office is richer than ever. The fresh youth romance 'Tonight, even if this love disappears from the world' (hereafter Oseisa) and the poignant melodrama 'If We' target couple audiences, while 'Sinui Akdan,' which opens on Dec. 31, bets on powerful emotion and humanism that span all generations. 'Sinui Akdan' deals with human kindness that transcends the pains and ideologies of the times and promises differentiated depth.
'Sinui Akdan' starts from the original premise that a North Korean security officer organizes a 'fake praise troupe' to earn foreign currency. But the film does not remain a simple farce. The desperate stories of people forced to act falsely to survive and the longing for freedom that echoes in the most closed spaces deliver suffocating tension and a heart-wrenching resonance to viewers.
In particular, 'Sinui Akdan' draws more anticipation as the new work of director Kim Hyung-hyeop, who portrayed intergenerational communication and warm family love in a humorous yet moving way in his previous film 'Dad Is a Daughter.' Director Kim Hyung-hyeop said, "If 'Dad Is a Daughter' depicted the process of families of different generations learning to understand one another, 'Sinui Akdan' depicts the process of people with different ideologies and goals recognizing each other's humanity through music and becoming one," explaining his directorial intent.
At the production briefing held on the 8th, director Kim Hyung-hyeop emphasized the power of the story, saying, "What writer Kim Hwang-seong focused on most was not simple laughter but the 'person' and 'humanism' that flow within it," and, "I hope this story based on a real-life motif becomes warm comfort and healing for audiences."
Added to this is the solid script by Kim Hwang-seong of 'Miracle in Cell No.7,' which raises confidence. The process in which a fake play started for survival becomes sincere, and the overwhelming climax that comes at its end, are expected to provide audiences with unforgettable catharsis.
Amid a flood of romance films, 'Sinui Akdan,' which will raise audience temperatures with its weighty sincerity and hot tears, opens on the 31st.<
