Actor Angelina Jolie revealed scars from a mastectomy.
On the 15th (local time) Time France released the cover of the inaugural issue featuring Angelina Jolie. In an interview with Time, Angelina Jolie shared personal stories about her family history marked by breast cancer, her children, life as an Oscar-winning actor, and her humanitarian work.
Jolie underwent bilateral mastectomy in 2013 as a preventive measure. Asked why she revealed the scars after 10 years, she said, "I share these scars with many women I love. And my heart always moves whenever I see other women sharing their scars. I wanted to be with them because I knew Time France would convey knowledge about breast health, prevention and breast cancer."
Jolie's mother and actress Marceline Bertrand was diagnosed with cancer and died in 2007 at the age of 56. Afterwards Jolie wrote an essay for The New York Times titled 'My medical choice,' and learned from test results that she had the BRCA1 gene, which greatly increases the risk of developing breast cancer.
At the time Jolie wrote, "The reason I wanted to write this was to tell other women that deciding to have a mastectomy is never easy. But it was a decision I made very happily. My chance of getting breast cancer dropped from 87% to less than 5%. Now I can tell my i-dle they do not need to be afraid of losing me to breast cancer."
Jolie later said she also had her ovaries and fallopian tubes removed in March 2015 to prevent ovarian cancer.
Jolie said, "All women should always be able to decide their medical journeys themselves and be able to choose based on sufficient information. Genetic testing and screening should be accessible and affordable for women who have clear risk factors or significant family histories."
She added, "I shared my experience in 2013 to encourage information-based choices. Medical decisions should be personal, and women should receive the information and support needed to make those choices. Access to screening and treatment should not vary by economic circumstances or place of residence."
