Fitness trainer and broadcaster Yang Chi-seung addressed the "overcharging controversy" at Gwangjang Market.
Yang Chi-seung posted a video titled "Gwangjang Market tteokbokki 6 pieces, was Yang Chi-seung really a patsy?" on his personal YouTube channel on the 13th. The released video shows Yang Chi-seung visiting Gwangjang Market in Jongno District, Seoul.
Gwangjang Market is a traditional market lined with long-established shops representing Seoul. It is especially well known as a popular spot for foreign tourists. However, it recently became embroiled in controversy over "overpriced" charges.
At one of the long-established stalls in Gwangjang Market, Yang Chi-seung ordered tteokbokki, japchae, fish cake, dumplings, and sundae. Among them, the snack prices drew surprise, with one serving of sundae priced at 8,000 won and the total order amounting to 27,000 won.
Yang Chi-seung even conducted interviews with vendors and lamented, "Because Gwangjang Market has been portrayed negatively in the media, the atmosphere has been bad lately. One place's wrongdoing gets everyone criticized. Since the street vendors have been wrong, there are no people." He added with regret, "If some vendors continue to show selfish behavior, even foreign customers may stop coming."
