'After comedienne Park Na-rae suspended her broadcasting activities, the differences in the editing approaches of the MBC variety shows she had appeared on became starkly apparent, drawing viewers' attention. Airing one day apart, 'Save Me! Homes' and 'I Live Alone' made completely different choices regarding Park Na-rae.'
#. 'Save Me! Homes,' the last traces remaining in full shots
On the Nov. 11 broadcast of MBC's 'Save Me! Homes', Kim Sook and chef Jung Ji-sun departed for Shanghai, China, for the 'Save Me! Global Homes' project in a special global episode. However, it was almost impossible to find appearances of Park Na-rae, an original member of the program who had been active as the 'Head of Team'.
Park Na-rae had been a regular cast member and served as Head of Team since the show's first broadcast in 2019, but she recently announced a halt to all broadcasting activities amid conflicts with former managers and various allegations. The production team also respected her wishes and decided she would step down, and they previously stated they would minimize Park Na-rae's screen time in existing footage.
In fact, on that day's broadcast Park Na-rae appeared only occasionally by voice without direct on-screen appearances. Existing panel scenes were reedited to focus on other cast members, and in close-ups or medium shots she was naturally and gradually removed. However, perhaps because complete deletion was difficult, she appeared briefly as a silhouette in some full shots.
Though the show was filled with plenty of on-site coverage and the addition of China experts, the glimpse of Park Na-rae passing through a full shot remained like a 'farewell scene' for the cast who had been together for a long time. The production team plans to continue the program without Park Na-rae for the time being.
#. a day later 'I Live Alone,' not even her name mentioned in the opening
And a day later, on the 12th, the atmosphere was even colder. In the opening of MBC's 'I Live Alone' (hereafter 'I Live Alone'), Park Na-rae's name was not mentioned at all.
That broadcast opened without much preface by featuring Kim Ha-seong, the first Korean to win a major league Gold Glove, as the 'Rainbow Live' guest, and in the studio were Jun Hyun-moo, Kian84, Code Kunst, Im Woo-il and Go Kang-yong, while Park Na-rae's name, which had been naturally mentioned in openings, never came up.
This broadcast drew more attention because it was the first episode after Park Na-rae officially announced her departure from 'I Live Alone.' Park Na-rae became the center of controversy after allegations of former manager bullying and alleged involvement in illegal medical procedures related to the so-called 'injection aunt', and as a result she has left 'Save Me! Homes', 'I Live Alone' and 'Amazing Saturday'.
#. full shots vs. complete deletion… divergent editing choices
As a result, 'Save Me! Homes' showed remnants in full shots considering existing footage, while 'I Live Alone' presented a stark contrast by thoroughly deleting even Park Na-rae's name from the opening.
Considering she was a core member who had led the program for a long time, some viewers reacted, "The time we spent together seems meaningless," and "It was practically an ignoble ending."
After Park Na-rae's departure, attention is focused on how MBC variety shows will continue editing and reorganizing members and what impact these changes will have on the programs' identities.<
