'Dynamite Kiss' An Eun-jin's tearful confession made viewers cry too.
SBS's Wednesday-Thursday drama 'Dynamite Kiss' (written by Ha Yoon-a, Tae Kyung-min; directed by Kim Jae-hyun, Kim Hyun-woo) is drawing explosive reactions not only in Korea but also overseas. It ranked No. 1 on Netflix's global non-English chart for two consecutive weeks (11/24~12/7). At the center of that is the sunny female lead who, for her family, even took a fake employed-mother job, the highly responsible An Eun-jin (playing Go Da-rim).
In episode 9 of 'Dynamite Kiss,' which aired Dec. 10, Go Da-rim faced a great trial. Gong Ji-hyuk (played by Jang Ki-yong) learned all of Go Da-rim's secrets (that she is neither a mother nor a married woman). There had been several opportunities for Go Da-rim to tell the truth. But thinking of her mother in the hospital and the sibling who disappeared leaving only huge debts, Go Da-rim missed the chance to reveal the truth herself. Then Gong Ji-hyuk found out everything.
In front of Gong Ji-hyuk, who asked, "Who are you?," Go Da-rim could only bow her head and say, "I'm sorry." Since her fraudulent employment was exposed, resigning was natural. Go Da-rim also decided to quit out of guilt, but seeing her mother in the hospital happy because of her, she resolved once more to be shameless. Pride does not pay her mother's hospital bills or repay the debts.
On a night of heavy rain, Go Da-rim went to see Gong Ji-hyuk without thinking. After waiting a long time, when she finally faced Gong Ji-hyuk, she swallowed her shame and told him her whole story. She explained why she left Jeju without saying goodbye and why she took the fake employed-mother job. Tears fell from her eyes, but Go Da-rim did her best to say what she had to. She admitted her mistakes and, though difficult, asked for a little more time.
Confessing one's own wrongdoings takes great courage. Nevertheless, Go Da-rim's courage was, as expected, for her family. Viewers who know that Go Da-rim first lied for her family empathized with the heart with which she made her tearful confession and watched, feeling how hard it must have been.
An Eun-jin completed Go Da-rim's tearful confession scene by delicately and deeply portraying a trembling voice, tears falling, and the moments of regaining composure amid wavering emotions. It was a touching, heavy performance 180 degrees different from the bubbly, lovable acting that perfectly fit the romantic comedy genre she had previously shown. It was another moment when An Eun-jin's irreplaceable acting, which seemed to change the mood of the drama as if the genre shifted in an instant, shone again.
The Go Da-rim character, who does her best for her family, is enough to draw empathy from many 'K-first daughters.' An Eun-jin amplified that empathy with deep acting and increased immersion. That is why many viewers, especially many 'K-first daughters,' shed tears with An Eun-jin's tears. As 'Dynamite Kiss' enjoys global popularity, expectations are high for An Eun-jin's performance to captivate viewers around the world.
