Ahead of its world-first release on Wednesday the 17th, the film Avatar: The Fire and the Fury, which has been drawing intense interest by ranking first in overall advance bookings and boasting nearly a 40% advance booking rate as of Wednesday the 10th, has revealed behind-the-scenes details of costume production that further complete a fresh vision of Pandora.
Avatar: The Fire and the Fury adds new details to costume design alongside its long‑boasted overwhelming visuals and innovative visual technologies, building an even richer vision of Pandora. Costume designer Deborah L. Scott developed a variety of handcrafted techniques based on indigenous traditional clothing and produced thousands of costumes and props by combining them with cutting‑edge technology. In the process she continually refined intricate decorations and embroidery, breathing new life into the Na'vi costumes.
In particular, in addition to the existing Na'vi, the visuals of the wind‑trading Tilarim tribe and the ash tribe Mangkwan are cited as major points that heighten the film's immersion. Deborah L. Scott began conceiving costumes for the new tribes in 2017 and carried out extensive work, producing more than 8,000 illustrations and over 639 samples.
About the Tilarim tribe's costumes, she said, James Cameron made the costume direction for the Tilarim tribe clear. They are nomads who wander the sky and cold places, and since this was a first attempt at such a setting, he wanted them to wear real, proper costumes this time. To reflect the nomadic tribe's nature of navigating the skies and trading, she added handmade‑looking ornaments and vivid colors that would be visible even in the sky to create a lively image of the tribe.
In this way, Avatar: The Fire and the Fury is expected to deliver deep immersion and spectacle by presenting to prospective audiences the elements they anticipate from the new Avatar film even more realistically through delicate costumes that reflect the characteristics of the new tribes and characters.
