'Extreme 84' Kian84 overcame the extreme.
On the 7th episode of MBC entertainment show 'Extreme 84,' Kian84 and Kwon Hwa-woon, who entered their first trail marathon in their lives, were shown succeeding in finishing the race.
That day Kian84 began walking after just 3 km when he faced a long uphill from the start. Surprised at himself, he tried to adjust his pace, saying, "I don't think I should overdo it. It's my first trail running entry, so I should know my limits and go with the steps of a small bird. If I follow the stork, my legs will split."
At the same time, Kwon Hwa-woon, true to 'run-cher' identity, said he had even made a strategy and maintained a fast pace, running without ever resting.
When the uphill course ended, a steep course appeared. Kian84, who unknowingly descended at tremendous speed, complained, "My body is heavy and won't stop. I move like a store-front inflatable doll," and "The slope is so steep my body can't be controlled and I'm dragged down like a car whose brakes are broken."
Having failed to control his pace, Kian84 ran out of energy on the downhill. Repeating running and stopping, he eventually collapsed on a sandy course. Kian84 said he thought, "Should I stop running?" and added, "Now even walking is painfully difficult. I'm starting to get cramps."
Eventually Kian84, who had lain down on the sand, after a short rest began running again. At this point, when he met a river, Kian84 drank water and took time to recharge once more.
He again faced an uphill course. That section was an on another level steep slope, reportedly called the runners' grave. From the start of the climb Kian84 breathed heavily and climbed with difficulty. By contrast, Kwon Hwa-woon broke through in just 26 minutes, astonishing the panelists.
In an interview Kian84 said, "It's hell," and added, "These days celebrities aren't just eating and playing. Our channel is the best for celebrity hell experiences. If you want to see celebrities suffer, watch 'Extreme 84.'" showing an almost unhinged demeanor.
Unable to get past the cursed section, Kian84 shouted, "I can't go," and even vomited. At that time Kwon Hwa-woon surged to sole second place and burned with passion to the end, crossing the finish line in second place and conquering the big five.
Still stalled, Kian84 ran again with the goal of finishing within seven hours. While repeating hydration and vomiting he said, "I might be the first participant to mark territory by vomiting, rather than the person who marked territory by overdoing it in Africa. If a lion marks territory by urinating, I marked territory by vomiting."
He finally passed 40 km, and while vomiting again Kian84 said, "I'm crazy too. Am I going to keep running while throwing up like this?" Not giving up, he entered a time of 6 hours, 38 minutes and 54 seconds and enjoyed the joy of completing the big five marathon.
In the studio Lee Eun-ji applauded, saying, "You really overcame the extreme," and Kian84 reflected, "There is a strange emotion. It feels like a foreign English teacher calling me, and no matter how hard it is, when I see myself going out every time there's an inexplicable strange thing. Because of that feeling I keep going out even though it's so hard."
