'Comedian Park Na-rae officially announced she will suspend her broadcasting activities after various controversies. Her main variety show MBC 'I Live Alone', as well as other programs she was appearing on, are taking successive steps toward her departure, amplifying the fallout.
Park Na-rae had originally planned to release a statement on the 7th but a day late, on the 8th, she posted her position directly on her personal social media. In the statement she said, "In early November two managers who had been like family suddenly resigned, and since we were not given enough time for sufficient conversation, misunderstandings accumulated."
She added, "With help from those around me, I only met face to face with my former managers yesterday, and the misunderstandings and distrust were resolved," but bowed her head saying, "Even so, I believe all responsibility is my fault." Park Na-rae declared a de facto period of self-reflection, saying, "I judged that someone who should bring laughter and joy can no longer cause trouble for the program and colleagues, so I decided to suspend all broadcasting activities."
At the end she apologized again, saying, "I deeply bow my head and apologize to everyone who has believed in and supported me."
On the same day, the producers of MBC 'I Live Alone' also officially acknowledged Park Na-rae's departure. The producers said, "We have been carefully discussing the various recent allegations to make a fair judgment," and added, "Considering the seriousness of the matter and respecting Park Na-rae's intention to suspend activities, we decided to halt her appearances."
They also apologized for the delayed statement, saying, "We apologize for the late position," and added, "We will do our best so the program can continue to deliver healthy laughter with a responsible attitude."
The problem is that the departures are not limited to one program. After 'I Live Alone', Park Na-rae is reported to have decided to leave tvN 'Amazing Saturday' as well. The MBC program she was appearing on, 'Save Me! Holmes', is reported to air the already filmed segments after editing them as much as possible, delivering considerable shock to viewers.
Online, reactions ranged from "The shock is great given she was a member of a national variety show," "The level of controversy has ultimately come this far," and "The producers must have felt a heavy burden," to responses such as "Apologizing and stepping down is a heavy but responsible decision."
Park Na-rae faces her biggest crisis since debut as successive controversies over manager power abuse, allegations of illegal medical acts, and an unregistered one-person agency overlapped. Even after the announcement of suspension of activities, the fallout from related issues is expected to continue for the time being.
