Kian84 ultimately collapsed on the trail during his first attempt at the "Big 5 Marathon."
Today (the 7th) at 9:10 p.m., the second episode of MBC's "Extreme 84" (directed by Park Su-bin, Kim Ki-ho, Jeong Ji-woon) will show Kian84, who entered his first trail marathon, facing a "hell section" of downhill·sand·uphill and being pushed to his limits.
The "Big 5 Marathon," in which Kian84 and Kwon Hwa-woon take on the challenge, is a race run through safari areas where the "Big 5"—lion·elephant·buffalo·leopard·rhinoceros—actually live, and it is a high-difficulty trail course that cuts through the natural environment. Sand·swamp·river·rock·steep slopes and various terrains continue without pause, demanding stamina·mental strength incomparable to ordinary marathons.
In the previous episode, Kian84 began walking after his stamina dropped sharply within 3 km on a steep uphill section, and in this episode he faces another crisis on a downhill section. Confronted with a sudden steep slope, he cries out, "My body won't stop!" and cannot control himself, continuing to sprint. Kian84 says, "It's like a car whose brakes are broken," unintentionally overtaking nearby runners.
After the steep slope, Kian84 showed such apprehension that he said, "I'm afraid to run again," and his ankle pain worsened, producing a vicious cycle of repeatedly running and stopping. An extreme sand terrain appears in succession and destroys Kian84's pace. Kian84 said, "This is a completely different world. This is not a race made for running. I should report it to the U.N.(?)" conveying the severity of the difficult course.
As his thirst worsens, Kian84 finally brings his face to a flowing stream and gulps water, surprising those around him. Then the uphill section, called the "runners' grave," completely wipes the smile from Kian84's face. Moreover, after experiencing compounded challenges such as altitude changes·exhaustion·thirst, he stops several times and eventually sits down on the trail and collapses. Will Kian84 be able to meet his goal of finishing within seven hours?
