Actor Jo Jin-woong announced his retirement.
On the 6th, Jo Jin-woong, through his agency, said, "I bow my head and apologize to everyone who trusted and supported me for disappointing them due to my past disgraceful actions."
He said, "I humbly accept all of this criticism, and as of today I will suspend all activities and put an end to my career as an actor," and added, "I believe this is the proper responsibility and duty I must bear for my past mistakes."
He continued, "I will do my best to reflect so that I can stand upright as a human being," and said, "I sincerely apologize once again. I was grateful to all whom I love and respect. I am sorry."
Earlier, Dispatch reported based on tips that Jo Jin-woong was involved in vehicle theft and other acts as a high school student and lived in a juvenile detention center. It also raised his past record of being fined for assaulting a theater troupe colleague in 2003 and a history of drunk driving, and added speculation that the use of a stage name was due to these past records, which intensified the fallout.
Afterward, the agency said, "As confirmed with the actor, we verified that there were wrongful actions during his minor years." It went on to explain, "This is based on some confirmed facts, and because it was more than 30 years ago it is difficult to completely ascertain the exact circumstances, and related legal procedures have already concluded, so there are limitations." However, it had stated, "But we clearly say that it is unrelated to any sexual assault-related acts."
